Pre-race routine:

First tri in 5 years. Did the Barrington race in 2002 and 2003 on a mountain bike and old Schwinn respectively. So, pretty much my first tri.
Event warmup:

Woke up at 5:00 and pretty much jumped out of bed. Tris are like golf apparently. No matter how early it is it's easy to wake up and roll out of bed. Took a cold shower because I forgot to turn on the water heater at the cape house. Genius. Jumped in the car and drove down to pick Josh (BostonBeginner) up. We got to the course an hour early and had plenty of time to set up. I was surrounded by first timers so I helped them set up their transition areas. You see, as my third race I am extremely experienced old vet. Ha. I took a quick spin on the bike to make sure everything was working well and that I would start in the right gear. Josh and I headed down to the water and got a short practice swim in. Jim (jaldrova) and I did a full practice swim the day before which was fantastic. We stood nervously in our wetsuits chatting with another group of first timers. I love how everyone is pulling for each other. It makes this sport so much more fun.
Swim
  • 08m 25s
  • 450 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not too bad. I started too far left and added some distance. Never got out of breath and breathed on both sides well. I was way too wide around the first buoy but pretty snug around the second one. Could have easily been under 8:00. Next time I will be. I hope to get a bunch more OWS in with Tritoy, Josh, and the rest of the Mass peeps. I definitely could have drafted better than I did. I only got behind people once or twice.
What would you do differently?:

Start straight on to the buoy rather than try and go wide and avoid people.
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Most of that was running up the sandy beach and to my bike. getting the wetsuit off was a breeze. I got into my bike gear pretty quickly too.
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to start with my shoes clipped in?
Bike
  • 34m 16s
  • 10 miles
  • 17.51 mile/hr
Comments:

The time above is a conservative guess. It was really 37:16 with both transitions. I timed the first one at 1:51 and the second was shorter but forgot to time it. Probably a little over a minute since it went well.

Still too slow. I definitely need to work on these chicken legs. The legs were burning alot but I could have pushed harder. The goal is to be averaging over 20 mph on these sprints. I should be able to hammer alot harder for only a half hour. Maybe it worked out ok since my legs felt good on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder and be stronger. Get clip on aero bars and practice. Practice pulling with my clips more too.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Bike racked well and helmet/shades on quickly. Shoes came off fast. One sock went on well. The other went on upside down so had to do it again. Overall it went well though. I got in the same time as another guy who was not using bike shoes and beat him out (he caught me on the run though).
What would you do differently?:

Practice to run without socks. Practice running in the TA with my bike. I had to sort of power walk because the bike was wobbling a lot.
Run
  • 28m 53s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 08m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt really good. The first 1.5 uphill hurt and I started feeling bad but thought of BT and the advice from some of you. "It's a sprint go till you puke". I kept pushing hard. Finally got to the flatter section and realized I felt good. I worked out the bike legs over a long uphill. I was pretty happy with that and felt strong. I pushed hard the rest of the run and put up a good time for me. I loved the last 50 yard beach run. Tons of people cheering us on and an emcee calling out our names.
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing with bricks. Do more hill work. Push harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Found wifey and gave her a sweaty hug and kiss. Found Josh's buddy Andy and waited for Josh to finish. We stood at the beach and rooted people on. It was fun yelling to people and telling them to pass the guy in front. They all pushed a little harder at the end.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Certainly not the course or the weather. Just keep training harder. Jorge always talks about specificity. I now know what he means. I really need to work on my speedwork. I know I can push harder longer than I did. I certainly didn't go soft but could have made it hurt more. I need to ride more with Tritoy and try to keep up with the machine that she is!

Event comments:

Overall a very good race. I beat almost all my goals. I finished in the top half of my age group (barely). Finished under 1:15. I didn't beat 8:00 on the swim though. I'll do it next time. Long term goal (next year or perhaps in September) is to place top 20 in AG.
