Swim
Comments: My least favorite part of this race. People were wildly optimistic with their time estimates, so there were a lot of people walking and waiting at the walls. The water was a little cold but I swam a nice race. I passed 4 people and probably lost 10-15 seconds waiting for people. It didn't make much difference in the race but was a little annoying. Anyway, I came out of the water with a low HR and was able to run through transition pretty easily. What would you do differently?: Put down a faster seed time. Transition 1
Comments: I had one of the faster times in my age group and I thought it went well. I kept it minimal - no socks, gloves, glasses. Wiped my feet off, bike shoes on and a run to the start line. Passed a bunch of people. Saw a bunch of people sitting down, not sure what they were doing. What would you do differently?: Nothing - Maybe have Scott set up my transition area Bike
Comments: The ride went really well. I came out of the water so late with the seeding that I didn't get passed on the bike. I passed a lot of people especially on the second lap. I felt really comfortable on the bike and managed a lot of the turns without coming out of the aero bars. Started seeing a bunch of the BTers on the bike. This was my first time over 20 mph during a race. I think the increase in bike speed has come from riding with the bike club. It's hard to get that type of intensity on a normal training ride. I also rode with a wheel cover for the first time. I couldn't tell much difference while I was riding. It felt very stable and probably contributed to the increase in speed. What would you do differently?: Maybe push a little harder Transition 2
Comments: Not as good a transition. I'm not sure what I could have done differently beyond run faster through transition. My hands were cold and I did have some trouble getting my shoes on. What would you do differently?: Run faster Run
Comments: This was a PR for a 5k. I felt really strong on the run and the last mile was 6:48. It's kind of downhill but still one of the best miles I've run. I kept waiting to blow up but I felt strong all the way through the run. Saw just about all the BTers during the run. I got to see Brad and Scott dueling on the run. They didn't seem to appreciate my attempt to get them to run faster. What would you do differently?: I think I could have run faster but I've never held that pace for that long and was tentative with pushing the pace Post race
Warm down: Crossed the line and went back to see some other people finish. Then hung out to wait for the results and awards. I had forgotten to start my watch and didn't know how I had finished. I thought I had done well but wasn't sure. I was surprised when I saw my name on the first page of the results and I had finished as 27th male and 28th overall. Unfortunately there were a lot of fast old guys and I was 7th in my age group. I would have finished 3rd in the 35-39 age group which is usually the most competitive group. Go figure. I'm happy with the results of this race. I improved almost 5 minutes from last year and made nice jumps in time on the bike and run. I've changed how I train this spring and it's helped with my times. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing Event comments: I like this race and it was fun to race with so many BTers. Shandra, the RD, runs a great race and it was nice to see some improvement Last updated: 2008-01-27 12:00 AM

I got up at 4:30 and left for the race at 5. I got there, checked in and body marked. Set up my transition area and chatted with all the BTers. It's nice having a race close by.
Stood on the pool deck with Kristin and Jan while laughing at the strange people dancing on the other side of the deck. I was a little annoyed that I was seeded 165. Last year I put the same time and was seeded 100. I don't think that many people improved over last year. Luckily I wore my sweatshirt and sandals down to the start, it was cold.
