Swim
Comments: I estimated 6 minutes for the swim and the fact that I timed out at 6'20", I think I was right on in my estimate. I figure that it took me at least 20 seconds to get out of the pool, grab my sandals and shirt and get up the stairs and out of the building to the timing pad. I think I got passed twice, once about half way through and once right near the end. What would you do differently?: Train more than twice for the swim. Transition 1
Comments: T1 was okay, I wish they were able to give split times to find out how slow I did this one. I took my time, I had to pull off my swimsuit and pull on my bib cycling shorts, then put on the HR monitor and my jersey, then my socks and cycling shoes. Then my helmet and sunglasses. Running down-hill to the bike start was a little scary, the carbon soled cycling shoes had absolutely no traction on the pavement. What would you do differently?: I need to get a trisuit to consolidate my efforts in T1. Bike
Comments: Just before the first turn, my chain fell off the large chain ring. I had to stop and put the chain back on. I think that it is an adjustment on the front dérailleur to fix this. I think that the dérailleur moved too far to keep the chain on the chain ring. When I got back on the bike and made the first turn, I noticed that the yellow mesh pad was now missing from my aerobottle. The rest of the ride was okay, except where I hit a pothole while down on the aerobars. The hills were not too bad on this course, but I can see that I need more training with hills! My official time was 46'11", but my bike computer was at 42'25" when I got back to the transition. What would you do differently?: Clearly, I need more variety in terrain with my training. To my detriment, I train with no hills and a lot fewer turns. I need to find a better location to train on my bike! Transition 2
Comments: Remember what I said about carbon soled cycling shoes with no traction... there is even less grip trying to run in them up hill with a bike! I unclipped my helmet while on the move, I was pretty quick ditching the cycling shoes and getting the running shoes. I did grab a cliff bar from my fuel pouch before I started the run. I also grabbed a camel back for the run. I need a lot of water while running. Especially since I did not get enough water on the bike! What would you do differently?: T2 was pretty smooth for me. I think that I should have had my cliff bar on the bike while riding instead of grabbing it on the way out for the run. Run
Comments: Good run. I ate maybe half of my cliff bar before I realized that I could not eat and run at the same time.. it got pitched off into a wooded area. I also had a camel back with me, I drank all of the water by the time I finished. At the two water stations, I just dumped the water on my head. I wish there were more water stations to keep me cool. I was over heating on this run. I also saw a few people with i-Pods or other MP3 players. I was jealous.. I know that my i-Pod helps me keep my pace better. What would you do differently?: 11 minute mile pace is a little slow for me, but I think that the hills in the cycling and on this run took a lot out of my legs. I think that hills have to play a more important part in my training! Post race
Warm down: Stretched then stood under a shower for about 15 minutes! What limited your ability to perform faster: For starters, recovering from a fever and a sore throat the last three days played a part in my performance. More of a factor than my health, my training played the major part in my performance. The lack of hills in both my cycling and running limited my ability to perform faster. Event comments: This was pretty good for my first Triathlon. They did start 20 minutes late, but it was not a big deal. I will be coming back for this one next year! Last updated: 2008-01-29 12:00 AM

The night before, I did not sleep very well. It seemed that I kept waking up every hour on the hour until my alarm went off at 433 am. Since this is my first race, I have no routine in place yet. I stopped at Dunkin' Donuts and got a large coffee and drove to the race, I was too nervous to eat anything.
I swam 3 or 4 laps in the pool, just to stretch out my arms and back. This is where I started second guessing my swim time that I submitted.
