Comments: Rode well, I had a rough start, I struggled clipping my shoe in and some guy in my wave built a big lead on me... I used the first mile to track him down and that got me warmed up! Over all, I could have gone a little harder, I wanted to be above 24 mph, but fell a little short. Still, this was a good thing cuz I wanted to be ready to run hard off the bike. What would you do differently?: Hammer harder on the downhills and on the fast sections so that my AVG MPH pace could have been a litte higher. Transition 2
Comments: Well I had the 9th fastest transition out of the top ten finishers... so obviously I need some work here. Looking back I can say, I totally forgot all of my bike to run transition skills from last year. Plus, I was a bit disoriented at my spot... lost a little time here. What would you do differently?: Mentally prepare myself during the latter part of the bike ride. Run
Comments: Mile 1: 5:52, Mile 3 and 4: 12:08 and Mile 4: 6:44 OK, my time got jacked because I ran the last mile on the road and not on the bike course... I don't know how much farther I ended up running, but I know for a fact that I did not run a 6:44 mile... I was at a 6:00 mile pace through mile 3 and I actually ran harder as I thought I was surging to the finish... Unfortunately, I missed the pylon to steer you to the bike trail and ran the road (as the course was set up last year) and I actually was running past the finish line when Mark and Ed hollered for me to turn so I could run to the finish mat. ARGH. I know I sound like a whiner, but I ran really well and I didn't bonk, and I know my paces and I'm sure I ran a good 30 seconds (or more) faster than 6:44 on the last mile. What would you do differently?: I wish I saw the arrow to turn onto the bike trail... Everyone else had no trouble finding it! But still, they could have had someone there to tell runners to turn... I was on the road running... I am like Forrest Gump when I run... I just run and run and this time I just ran and ran... Its a good thing the road ended up near the finish line! Post race
Warm down: Drank Mark Dillard's beer and hung out with Denver's FAB BT crowd. What limited your ability to perform faster: I ran well... I rode well... mental errors effected my time today, but seriously... I'm thrilled with my time. I was fast. I beat Mark Dillard, Andy Palmer, Ed Oliver, David Anderson, Ken Stokes other super fast guys... the two guys that did beat me are both serious players... one of the guys was or is a pro cyclist and the other guy is a 23 year old speedster, so overall not bad for this 42 year old functioning alcoholic! Event comments: Awesome fun... I took 1st for the series and although the event only does age group winners, I'm pretty sure I had the best race series overall. So, 1st in AG... for the series with a 2nd place overall in race one and a 1st place in race 2 and a 3rd place in race 3. All of the races were well represented by The Denver BT contingent... SKARL one her age group, Dills took 2nd and I think Kenny took 3rd so a BT Masters sweep this year with BT taking 1st in the women's division thanks to Sue... Well done! Got up and prepped my bike... packed gear and "returned some over due books" to the library...
Got to the Start and set up transition and chatted with the BT crew.
2 mile bike ride...
I was in wave H, which gave me some extra time so I went to the porta-potty. I must have thought that I had a lot of extra time and nearly missed my start. When I rolled to the start I asked where was H, and someone said way up front! I thought that's weird but I arrived just as G was leaving. I had barely enough time to set my watch and bike computer and then BAM...
