Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:30, took a shower to loosen up my balky back and hit the road by 4:15. Stopped and got some coffee and water.

Got to Sea Isle just before 6 AM - made great time! Parked, picked-up my race packet, got marked and set up my space in the transition area. I left my bike at the car because we were told that once the bike was in the transition area we weren't allowed to take it back out - I still wanted to warmup and make sure that there wasn't anything wrong with my equipment.
Event warmup:

Took a short bike ride out over the bridge into Sea Isle. Got back around 6:45 and didn't get a chance to go for a run. Put my wetsuit on and walked down to the water. By the time I had gotten far enough out to do any sort of swimming - everyone was called back in for the race meeting.

Comments:

55 DEGREES!!!! Even with the full wetsuit it was cold. Everytime I tried to get a rhythm going with my breathing - I could really only go two strokes at a time and then breath. Threw me completely off. I sited pretty good, but I wasn't getting a rally good pull. Once I got out of the water I sat down on the sand and took my wetsuit off. everything went well until the wetsuit got stuck on my right ankle because of the timing chip.
What would you do differently?:

focus.

Figure out a better way to get my wetsuit off. It has been two times I have sat down following the swim and taken my wetsuit off. It really work pretty good. In doing so - my swim time is probably 1 minute longer than it should be, but my transition #1 time is shorter.
Transition 1
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

taking my wetsuit off at the water's edge saved me time in transition because it is ultimately easier to run in the sand back to the transition area and it saves energy too. Once I got back into the transition area I grabbed my helmet and bike and took off. My shoes are always clipped in so I don't worry about running in cycling shoes or putting socks on.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.

Comments:

I happen to like taking corners and turns. It always feels like I make up a little bit of time on the corners because I don't slow down. It seems like a lot of people slow down because they might be scared. I try to use that to my advantage.

Had a really nice tail wind on the section of course that went South (towards Avalon) - but heading back North I just got hammered with a strong headwind. I tried to stay small and switched from my big ring and lower cadence to a smaller ring and higher cadence - this is where I really lost a lot of speed. I was averaging 25 mph on the south side of the course.
What would you do differently?:

my cadence needs to be higher than a 72 average. although I do normally mash on my big ring. we'll have to get out on some more rides.

Oh yeah - literally my first time on my bike since the Wildwood Tri/Du last August!!

An no spin classes this year either! So I was pretty happy with my bike segment.
Transition 2
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

Slipped my feet out of the shoes just before the last turn and jumped off my bike. Ran with the bike pretty good. Slipped my sneaks with the quick locks on, grabbed my hat and a Guu and took off.
What would you do differently?:

Not a bad transition. I could have been faster (under 1 min) if I wasn't screwing around with taking my Polar watch off and trying to put my Garmin on.
Run
  • 35m 43s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Now the run is where I am normally HORRIBLE. Guess what. I was horrible again. I did not stop and walk once but I couldn't get my legs to move any faster. Jumping over the bulkheads every 1/4 mile didn't make my life easier. Anyway the fastest I have ever run a 5K has been in 27 minutes. I wasn't going to beat that time today.

Oh yeah. Newtons. No orthotic insert or socks. Felt really good on my feet. The first time I wore them in a race.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched while I watched the awards ceremony.

Walked my stuff to my car and then later rode my bike from transition to my car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Dropping some weight. Being 240 lb's would be first on my list.

Although this is one time I can say I went into a race without any bumps, bruises, aches, pains or recurring injuries. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the rest of the season.

FREEZING COLD WATER - threw my focus off during the swim.

Strong head wind. I was at 25 mph with the wind.

Event comments:

Pretty good race - especially the fact it is so early in the season.

Perfect race to kick-start the racing season. Well organized. Great cause.
