Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4AM. Toasted a whole wheat bagel and ate it with some peanut butter. Drank some water then jumped in the shower to loosen up and wake up. Got my bag and gear together. I caught a ride to the race with my cuz (first-timer) so I had to have my gear gathered and ready by 5:15AM.

We parked and then walked to the transition area. We chose the racks closet to the Swim-In and Bike-In. Turned out to be a great decision if you don't mind running with your bike (which in comparision to the transition run at NJ State was a piece of cake). Set up our stuff and made sure to hit the crapper (twice?).
Met up with Steve and gave him my aero helmet that gave me absolutely no speed at NJ State.

Event warmup:

The three of us went for a 1/2 mile run to warm-up before the race meeting. I usually try to get into the water to warm up but I didn't have any time this time.

Comments:

Wow. First - the pond was really scuzzy, 2-3 feet deep and tasted like I had been sucking on a penny. Eick! I reached down and scooped up some of the pond/lake bottom to see what I was walking on and it looked like the stuff those barges on the Hudson are filled with. BLACK SLUDGE! eew.

Anyway the first 50-75 meters went well. I was watching Phelps' 400 meter medley Saturday night on TV and saw they only breath to one side during their race. I thought why don't I try that tomorrow instead of bi-lateral breathing. Well - it worked great for the first 50 meters until my lungs started to burn. At that point I was out in front but by the time I started breast-stroking a LOT of people were passing me. I couldn't get back into a smooth rthym until I round the buoy and was heading back to shore. That's when I got my breathing under control, starting stretching out, getting a great pull and was nice and stream lined.
What would you do differently?:

Stop trying to race and get out in front.

If I had completed the first part of the swim (up to the buoy) the same way I finished - my swim time probably would have been closer to Vincenttown's time (7 minutes).

Transition 1

Comments:

Well everything went good until I tried to get my race belt (number) on. I was already carrying my bike and every time I stopped to try to get my belt on my bike would come close to falling. I had to almost rack my bike again to get my belt on.

After I got my belt on, I ran to the bike mount line and my tri shorts kept getting caught on my bike saddle. Never had that happen before.

After starting the ride, I tried to get my feet strapped in I almost bit it after I veered to the right and scraped the curb with my front wheel.
Luckily I didn't fall.
What would you do differently?:

Wear my race belt under my wetsuit.

Comments:

From the time I woke up I didn't feel right. Felt tired. No energy. From the beginning of the ride, I just couldn't get going. I couldn't find that zone. Very uncomfortable. Shifting back and forth. I couldn't determine if I should just mash like I normally do or just go for a high cadence and potentially lose power. Whatever. It felt like I wasn't really pushing myself. I wasn't sucking air or out of breath. It just didn't feel like it was my day.

Oh yeah. I was making the turn right when the one rider that crashed was being moved into the ambulance. I did not see the police car further upp on the left side and I nearly ran right into it - my back wheel fishtailed out and almost hit the officer standing near his car.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know. I just couldn't find it in myself to push it today.

Big letdown for me. Big.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

Being racked right at the Bike-In worked great for me. I think :49 seconds is an acceptable transition time. Nothing went wrong.
What would you do differently?:

Nada!
Run
  • 27m 23s

Comments:

Wow. I was averaging 36 and 37 minutes for the run on most of my races this summer. Maybe it was a by-product of pushing myself on the bike. With the let-down I had on the bike today I felt like it was directly connected to the way I felt on the run. Legs felt really good - not heavy.
By far and away the best 5k time I have EVER done during a sprint tri. Before King's Grant my best 5k time was from last summer's NJ State Triathlon and that was like 29:45. My fastest 5k time ever was about 27:15 (Sesame Place in '07).

I was VERY pleased with a 27 minute 5k. Couldn't have been happier (well, no, I could have been happier if I ran a 25 minute 5K).
What would you do differently?:

Huh? What? 27 minutes is asking a LOT from me.

NOTHING!
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched a little. Congratulated Steve (1:01) and Peter (1st timer - 1:05) on their races. Talked about how we all should have done better in some aspect and then grabbed a couple of soft pretzels and walked around a little.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Life in general. Staying up late the night before.

Maybe the Cheesesteak Grinder I had at 8PM Saturday night.

Event comments:

Would consider doing it again next season - even with the muddy, brackish water.

Fast bike course and really nice run course. Plus DQ always runs a nice event.
