Run
Comments: There was a swim before this run, so the race report is a bit topsy turvy. Came out of the swim and ran into transition, tried to get as much sand of the feet as I could and threw on the sneakers, I knew it wasn't going to be a good idea no socks and I was right. I headed out to start the run, wondering why I was doign it my legs were full of lactic acid from the day before so I tried to run as hard and fast as I could but the legs just weren't going as fast as i wanted them too. got passed by quite a few people, including Robbo flashing past! What would you do differently?: try to get more sand of my feet first, make sure the elastic laces actually are done up tight enough, Not train really hard the day before a race. Transition 1
Comments: flying fast transition shoes were off in a flash and grabbed the goggles ran off down the beach Swim
Comments: First swim 500m 8.54 Second Swim 500m 10.59 (includes a long beach run back to the water) the first swim was a bit tough, I had a really high heart rate and struggled a bit to get it down, running into the water to start is something i"m not that used to and my heart rate goes skyhigh. But got to the first buoy and had settled the heart rate only to get some big kicks and knocks by a girl in a wetsuit (it was so way to warm for a wetsuit) Anyway I hung back a little to avoid her, didn't feel like pushing it fast to get around her. rounded the second buoy and saw a surf club guy from teh wave behind coming past me to my left and I thought ohh I'll try and get on his feet and draft as long as i could. so I kicked a little harder and stuck to his feet like glue. and went sailing past the chick in a wetsuit! felt much better after that. I managed to hang onto his feet till the beach as well! Second swim, there was a long beach run from transition to the water along soft sand, my legs don't like that so much, but ran as fast as I could walked into the water a little though to make sure my goggles were on properly, and get my heart rate down a little bit. I had a great second swim, it was great cooling down and I just setttled into a great pace and started passing people that had passed me on the run. got a stinger on my neck which wasn't pleasant but just kept swimming, it was a bit tougher coming back into shore this time the wind had picked up. What would you do differently?: Swim faster practice some ins and outs running on the beach. Transition 2
Run
Comments: My feet were really not comfy in my shoes with sand and no socks and my orthotics. Again I tried to run as fast as I could, its funny how 2.4k's seems really long when I'm used to runnimng much longer think I prefer 10k's to 2.4k's I just couldn't get my legs to go fast enough. all those people I passed in the swim passed me back again. What would you do differently?: probably wear socks. its hard to say whether its worth putting socks on or just dealing with the blisters afterwards. Lost another toe nail while I was running and it hurt. Post race
Warm down: Immediately took the shoes off, chatted to people, chatted to one of the timing guys who I met this week and tried to talk him into changing my results :) he promised he'd fix it so I'd come first hehe! This race is great fun! really good club race, the surf club is opened up afterwards with the bar open, had a beer while talking away to everyone then presentations. Being a State Championships you could only place in your age group if you were a Tri WA member, so they are calling otu the results and I'm cheering for my club members as they won trophys and nearly died of shock when they called out my name for third place in my age group! (ok so I actually came 7th in my age group if you include nonTWA members and yes there weren't all that many people racing, BUT my trophy says 3rd 30 - 34 State Aquathlon!) then on to spot prizes and I won a $50 voucher! awesome I'm doing this race again! it was fun friendly and had a great volunteers ;) thanks Shaun! What limited your ability to perform faster: too much training, being tired and lack of speed! its hard to get yourself going on a fri arvo could have quite easily sat back with a beer instead of racing, the beers did go down very nicely after the race though! Event comments: Loved this race and will come back for it next year. Perfect conditions! and it was fun not having to worry about a bike, bike shoes and a helmet etc. Last updated: 2008-02-04 12:00 AM

Raced to get to the beach after work, got stuck in traffic and was slightly late for my friend to pick me up. Was lacing up my still wet running shoes in the car on the way there, decided that elastic laces were required for the race. (good race prep put elastic laces in shoes on the way to the race! )
got there with plenty of time to chat and register and set up. Was wierd setting up a little transition area, with no bike it was a different experience
some of the guys from my tri club convinced me I needed to do a warmup. think this is the first time I've ever done a run warm up before a race. so headed off for a short run. Tried the elastic laces and no socks. they felt ok.
the race reports a bit topsy turvy as our aquathlons consist of swim run swim run. 500/2.4/500/2.4
