Swim
Comments: Well I expected the swim to be slow, but this was horrible. I could not swim in anything resembling a straight line and got flustered and lost all focus. Couldn't seem to take a breath without sucking in water. Pretty much floated down course. =) Halfway through the swim I started to wheeze with every breath and could not take a full breath without coughing. Anxiety induced? This lovely effect stayed with me the entire race. What would you do differently?: Keep my wits about me more and at the very least remember to switch to another stroke when freestyle isn't working for me. I just kept trying to 'fix' my broken swim. Transition 1
Comments: Longest transition run ever for the 40-44 folks in this race. I guess somebody has to be at the far end! My brain was not working well after that swim so there was a comedy of errors going on in T1. What would you do differently?: Keep on practicing. Bike
Comments: Tough ride for me, couldn't catch my breath even though I was spinning pretty easy and felt ill due to all the bay water I sucked up. Going downhill here was a blast. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 2
Comments: This transition was much better than the first. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: As soon as I left transition and began the run it felt like I had a band around my chest pressing tighter and tighter. This made me nervous, so I walked until I could breath ok, than ran a slow pace until I felt the tightness and coughing begin, repeat. What would you do differently?: Not sure. Post race
Warm down: Water, food, stretching and some walking around. What limited your ability to perform faster: Well I could certainly be training more... I definately need more swim time. Not sure if the asthma problem was a result of anxiety or just lack of fitness in general. I'm hoping it doesn't keep showing up in the longer races. Event comments: Even though I had a tough day, this race was awesome. I really liked the course. I met most of the lifeguards along the way in my swim =) and they couldn't have been more helpful and supportive. Great volunteers all around and the folks watching and cheering were great too. This was a great learning experience and I'm eager to try this distance again soon. Last updated: 2008-02-05 12:00 AM

Up early with coffee and a bagel with peanut butter. Met Mike down at the lobby at 5:30 and we walked over to the transition area.
Just the walk to the transition area, some stretching, and a little swimming before the horn blew.
