Pre-race routine:

Ate the normal breakfast of pancakes but couldnt drink the coffee. I was real nervous and my mouth was so dry I couldnt drink my coffee. Ate a cliff bar about 1h prior to the start
Event warmup:

The only real warmup was about a 10 or so minute swim to try to relax and warm up the shoulders.
Swim
  • 33m 49s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 36s / 100 yards
Comments:

I really got the crap kicked out of me on the swim. I have never done a race that was that agressive. I think that some people just took the opertunity to punch and kick anyone they could.
I had some trouble with the navigation, my goggles were real dark and I had trouble with the overcast skys in the am locating some bouys. I also tried to take an outside line so I didnt get punched or elbowed in the eye anymore.
What would you do differently?:

I would probably not start so far up front. I did it looking to draft some faster people but I ended up getting pounded on pretty good. It made me a bit nervous and I had to slow to let some people go by before I could get into any kind of groove.
Transition 1
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

I did the shoes then ran with them. After passing a ton of people within about 10s out of T1 who were trying to get shoes on while clipped in I realized that it is probably not the best idea. For me anyway.
What would you do differently?:

I probably would not take gloves along. I always put them in my pocket and never take them out. Why carry them??? Had some trouble with my socks, I guess lay things out a bit better so they are toe up.
Bike
  • 2h 42m 17s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Had tons of shoulder pain about half way through. I really couldnt relax enough to let the tension off my shoulder and rest. I had to sit up way more then I would have liked and I think that really killed my speed.
I ran out of infinit nutrition around 40-42 miles. I think that hurt me a bit but I had the hammer gel flask and just hit off that and water every 15 - 20m and I think it ended up saving me.
What would you do differently?:

I am not really sure what to do about the nutrition. I thought that 70oz of infinit would be plenty but it was not. Maybe for the next one I will take along an extra bottle from the start. I think I would rather have too much then too little. I think I am going to give salt caps a try. I will have to start training with them this week to see how they do.
Transition 2
  • 02m
Comments:

I was pretty fast for this transition until I made the corner and spotted the port-o-john. I decided it would be better to take the extra 30ish seconds and take a leak rather then have to hold it on the course until I had a chance. Good choice, b/c I felt 10x's better after the pit stop
What would you do differently?:

I think for the longer events I will put on some more sun block. I had 30 on and I think with all the sweat most of it washed off. I got pretty toasted, not burnt but just enough for me to feel it in my neck.
Run
  • 1h 50m 14s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

This run kicked my butt real bad. I really struggled for the first few miles trying to get into some sort of rythem. I think for the first 2 miles I was over a 9m pace. I knew I was going slow but just couldnt do anything about it. The feed stations every mile were the best thing going. I just kept looking forward to the next one. I took some salt tabs at about the 8 mile mark. May or may not have been a good idea. I didnt feel any ill effect from them, maybe they were enough to fight off the cramping until the very end. Maybe start working on useing them more to see how well I do on them.
What would you do differently?:

I dont really know what I could do differently. I pushed pretty hard, I think if I tried to push harder I would have cramped up much sooner and really paid the price. I woudl have loved to run a sub 8m mile but I think it comes back to my nutrition on the bike that probably killed my run.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of walking all over and some stretching. Really no run after, my feet were killing me and I just wanted out of my running shoes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think the heat for the run really killed me along with running out of infinit hurt me. Maybe it hurt my mind more then my body and I just let it get to me. I probably should work on something to reduce cramping during the run.

Event comments:

Real good race. I think what made it even better was my fan club that came up to cheer me on. Overall I am happy with my preformance, I would have liked to be 10-11m faster but what can you do but learn from mistakes, move on and hope to not make them again.

Course: Pretty hilly I thought and I run a lot of hills when I am out. The woods section was a real shocker. I was not at all anticipating that. It was probably in the course description but I really didnt read the whole thing. The downhills were a bit too steep in sections, it was tough to keep tension on my legs so I was not just running out of control.
