Swim
Comments: First event ever, so didn't know what to expect. Started out really wide to cut down on kicks in the head. Also alternated 3 side breaths with one forward (straight up) to try to stay on course. The frigid temperature of the water robbed me of full breaths through a good portion, but I was ok with the pre-race routine overall. What would you do differently?: Concentrate on rhythm. That will get the breathing down and mentally get past the cold. Transition 1
Comments: Pam helped a great deal, but didn't help with the fact that the zipper stuck. I spent the entire time getting out of the water trying to get the zipper done. Finally did when I got to the bike. Otherwise went fine. What would you do differently?: Practice with the zipper Bike
Comments: Thought I would be best in this event. The problem is most of my practice had been on flat land on South Shore of LI. Bad move. The hills kicked my hind tire. Pace of 15.3 was low for what I wanted out of this race. What would you do differently?: Practice more on hills! Transition 2
Comments: Don't use clipped shoes, so biked in running shoes. Time in transition was spent stretching legs which I've had a problem with in practice. What would you do differently?: Cut down on some stretches and get going a little faster. Run
Comments: Cramped up a bit during run, but moderately happy with performance. Would like to get under 30 mins. What would you do differently?: Drink a bit more to prevent cramps, beat mental exhaustion and just push. Post race
Warm down: Walked around with glow of completing first triathlon. Family there to keep me walking rather than standing still. What limited your ability to perform faster: All mental. Event comments: First triathlon, wouldn't trade it for anything. Doing it again in 2009. Last updated: 2008-02-09 12:00 AM

Woke up earlier than ever imagined (4:30). Drove 20 mi to the event. Dropped off wife and gear then drove to school 2m away from start. Rode bike to event. Setup, stretch and bathroom. Used Pam under the suit for ease of taking off.
After initial bike ride to event. Based on Internet research with C-O-L-D water in May, dipped in about 5 mins before first wave. Came out 2 mins before start shivering, but made all the difference when the thin layer in the wet suit warmed. Jumped in and was ok with the temperature.
