Pre-race routine:

Got up waaay too freakin' early to drive to Kings Mtn. Gatorade and the usual peanut butter bagel during the ride (only I forgot to eat half the bagel!!). Run around dropping off stuff at 2 different transition areas, plus catching the shuttle bus to the swim start.
Event warmup:

See above---all that running around must count for something
Swim
  • 31m 4s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

My time was about 4 mins faster than last year and would have been even better if I could have swim a freakin' straight line. I swam s's all over the 2nd half of the course. Felt longer than White Lake
What would you do differently?:

Swim straight
Transition 1
  • 02m 53s
Comments:

Not bad considering the long distance from the mat to my spot. Also had to throw all of my swim gear into a bag for pickup before leaving T1
What would you do differently?:

not much...pretty satisfied
Bike
  • 1h 30m 45s
  • 27.96 miles
  • 18.49 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt really strong on the bike. We were about mile 11 of the 28 mile bike.....I was climbing a hill at about 17-18 mph when a white pickup passed me in the left lane. No big surprise there, happens all the time. I was just about to the crest of the hill when he slams on the brakes and makes a sharp right turn in front of me to catch a side street. I lock down the brakes and skid about 20 feet. The bike starts rotating left and I'm still moving way too fast and the guy is still in front of me. Hit him at about a 30 degree angle and start into a 360 degree spin. Manage to get my left foot down and drag it, which burns off most of my momentum. I end up laying flat on my back with my right foot still clipped in. Stand up, shake everything to make sure it works, quick look at the bike, scream a few choice words at the driver who has stopped and come over by now to make sure that I was still alive. The really funny thing was that when I stood up the guy went back to his truck. I guess he was afraid that 6'4 of triathlete might be looking to return the favor and pound on him. Back on the bike and away I went. Rode for about half a mile before the adrenaline really kicked in...got pissed and hammered the accelerator. For the next 18 miles I rode like a maniac...mad as hell and cussing the whole time. I didn't get passed on the bike by another person after that point in the race. Took almost 5 mins off my bike time from last year even with the 2-3 mins I lost. Also took about 12 mins off my time for the entire race from last year. Not a bad day altogether.....no real damage to me or my bike. I did sacrifice a good pair of tri shoes though. I tore 2 holes completely thru the inside of my left shoe. Even tore thru my sock but not a mark on my skin. Altogether feeling pretty lucky...could have been bad.

What would you do differently?:

Ummm....not hit the truck. Then again, maybe it made me go faster :)
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Pretty fast...happy with this
What would you do differently?:

drink a beer??
Run
  • 1h 01m 30s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

HOT HOT HOT Legs felt ok, no issues after bike crash. Could have been stronger run, but pretty happy overall. Actually put some time into the guys I usually race, rather than my usual practice of pulling ahead on bike and then giving time back on the run. I actually raced an ambulance back down the last 1/4 mile or so. They were coming in to pick up a patient and I was trying to get to the finish line. I won :)
What would you do differently?:

Wear roller skates
Post race
Warm down:

Found some snacks and drinks...watched some of the QCTC crew finish up and then high-tailed it for home so we could leave for the beach.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Me :)

Event comments:

Always hot and tough course, but really like it.
