Swim
Comments: Felt really good thru out the swim. The water was in a nice smooth waves that I timed perfectly for a smooth trip out. This is probably the calmest (as far as mass start), I've had in a while. Stuck to my straight line along the bouys with minimal interuptions. Turned the first corner fine, passed a few people there & can only describe the majority of it as smooth sailing. Self pacing was on the nose. Half way thru here I started feeling the burn under both arm pits from the constant rubbing against the wet suit (ouch!). I think it helped hold better form. Right after the second (last), turn there was someone that was on my left ankle for a while. Kept hitting my leg which was very annoying, very quickly. He had plenty of room on either side to pass or draft but he kept at it. Picked it up a bit & lost him. Tide was going out at the time I wanted to finish so the ladder out of the water was forever in the same range. What would you do differently?: Put on some lubrication under both arms. Burnt pretty bad on both sides from rubbing on the bib-john. On the course I'm very happy with my performance. I'm glad to say that fort the past 3 years my swim times have steadily improved (slow improvements but forward none the less). I'm going to begin concentrating more on the swim for a while. I'd love to be able to do under 30min swim for next year (without wet suit). Transition 1
Comments: Was not as winded as have been in the past. Felt good but kept the running for another time. Couldn't make up my mind how best to remove the wet suite, then what to do with it (duh!). The rest was pretty much automatic but slow. What would you do differently?: Need to practice transitions. Never had worried about times here but am now paying attention to how much time is lost there. Could really help my overal times a lot. Bike
Comments: First off, registering as an AG in the 30's really showed me how competitive they can be. I'm pretty sure I got passed by everyone in sight. I don't care. I wanted to finish & that I did on my own terms & I'm fine with that......for this year only. I was comfortable thru out the entire course, head winds were not an issue (thanks to my routes at home having penty of that). I was content with what I did here. What would you do differently?: Ride more the months before this race. Transition 2
Comments: Moved fluidly but lost a lot of time drying feet & stretching (needed it). What would you do differently?: Get in better shape. Run
Comments: Did as planned - run walked. Took about as long as expected. What would you do differently?: Maintain better shape so even if time doesn't allow proper training, I won't pay as high a price again. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Time constraints limited my training severily but some procrstination didn't help either. Event comments: For about an hour after the race I felt like my blood pressure was going thru the roof or blood vessels were severly constricted , was very uncomfortable the entire time. Stretching the legs (which felt worst than the rest), helped but the rest of the body was pretty much unberable Almost went to the med tent but had been waiting on line for so long, I didn't want to give up the spot. Got up late at 5:00am (translation-wife kicked me off the bed). Didn't sleep well, stomach was upset. Downed some oatmeal & gatorade while driving to site. Waited (forever), on line for body marking (lady screwed up my # on the arm - I told her to cover it up with an eagle, Mom with a heart or something (lots of cackles) :)
None, had just enough time to set up transition & get out before they forced us out of there. Walked (briskly), to the start & barely got my wet suit on before they announced my wave on the line (that was close).
Funny bit - I never go anywhere without a roll of toilet paper. Just before I started putting my suit on I went to the porta-potty line & asked if anyone wanted it (no bidders, just stares). Shrugged my shoulders & announced my intention to toss it in the garbage. They all of a sudden did their best immitation of a starving pack of sharks. I tossed it to the first one on line & said pass it on when your done. I heard an unhuman-like shreak & him dissappearing in the mob (I don't think he made it).
