Pre-race routine:

Not much. We were staying in a hotel, and opted to skip a big breakfast and go with a Timmy's bagel w/ butter and water. Took a few ibuprofen for my foot, and headed out.

D is #102 in the pics. I didn't have my race number on the outside.
Event warmup:

Nothing. It was pouring rain and freezing cold by the time we were getting ready for the event, so other than a little jumping up and down to keep warm, we just huddled under the shelter with everyone else. They called us down to the start line, and within about 30 seconds, the race started.

Comments:

Wow was this a tough course. I just simply was not prepared for the hills. For the first 4K or so, I ran to military cadence, which I think helped me to keep a decent pace. BUT the water was too much for my iPod, and it crapped out shortly before the end of the first loop.

Nearing the 7K mark, my right knee started to complain. I perservered. Just after the 9K mark, I was walking. An older gentleman came up an slowly passed me. He was great. He said: "What? Even heavy breathing of someone behind you... even someone passing you won't get you running?" After I chuckled to myself, I said something about drafting him, and we basically ran together to the final 150 metres. It helped to get up the hill doing it with someone else.

I did pretty good with my run/walk combo, considering that I was not at all trained to deal with the hills, and I haven't run more than 3.5 miles since my last 10K in February.
What would you do differently?:

If I could run the entire distance, I know my time would be substantially better, but I'm just not there yet. Having some hill training probably would have helped. I ran at a good pace when I was running, but it was not as fast as Detroit. Of course, Detroit had NO HILLS!
Post race
Warm down:

Run to the truck and strip off as much wet clothing as possible. Swear at my iPod and pray it fixes itself (thank goodness it did!)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Obviously the pouring rain did not help. It was really cold at the start of the race, and only got colder. Biggest limiter is my fat @$$. I have been training pretty consistently lately, and I just need to keep it up.

Event comments:

Course was good. 10K was supposed to start at 9:30, didn't start til 10. Wouldn't have been a problem if it wasn't cold and rainy. No swag in the race packet, but at least the numbers weren't crappy. I'd do it again just to try to improve my time, if not for any other reason.
