Pre-race routine:

My wife and I arrived in Hyannis on Saturday afternoon, went to the race hotel to check in and get our numbers, browsed through the expo there, then went to our hotel to check in. We ate and early dinner, watched some TV and hit the sack early to get a good night's sleep.
Event warmup:

We arrived at the race site around 8:30 for a 10:00 start, so we went inside and hung out for a bit. Just after 9:30 I went outside to warm up, which consisted of 10 minutes of fast walking, followed by 5-10 minutes of stretching. Standing at the start waiting for the gun to go off, it occured to me that I had never felt so loosened up before a race. I was concerned that I might be a bit overdressed since I was not very cold at the start, but I figured that I could shed layers as I ran if need be.

Comments:

The course was a winding loop through several areas of town, including a few sections right by the water. In these areas it was a bit windier, so I was glad that I was not underdressed. Where there was no wind it was relatively warm so I would unzip my jacket and take off my gloves, then when it got windier I would do the reverse. I also had a headband covering my ears that I pulled up and down as the wind dictated.

I was disappointed to not be able to run the 1/2 marathon as I had intended, but given that I've been injured I was happy to be able to run at all. I was able to run the whole course without having to stop, and I even beat my time from last year by :15 per mile. Looking at the standings though is sobering, as my run is still pathetically slow!

Pace splits - 11:11, 11:17, 11:28, 11:29, 11:41, 11:08, 10:47

HR splits - 162, 170, 174, 176, 175, 181, 184

I'm shocked at how high my HR was, since I did not feel like I was pushing that hard at all!
What would you do differently?:

Overall I ran the race the best I could, but the race made clear (once again) how much work I need to do on my running.
Post race
Warm down:

After I finished I walked around the parking lot for ~5 minutes to let my legs cool down, then went into the hotel and stretched. I went back outside to watch my wife finish the 1/2 marathon, but I somehow missed her and eneded up finding her inside. We grabbed some quick food and drove back to our hotel, where I was able to use my foam roller on my IT bands before hitting the shower.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was mainly hindered by my knee injury and the fact that I hadn't really run in over a month, but even without these factors I probably would not have had a great run.

Event comments:

Overall I was glad to be able to run and still beat last year's time, but I'm still disappointed with how slow my pace was, and slightly concerned about how high my HR was. Running is still clearly my area of weakness and my goal over the winter was to really work on improving, so I guess I need to carry that goal forward once my knee is fully healed.
