Run
Comments: I was going to just stay with Meredith and we would pace each other put the cannon fired and I jumped off the line pretty fast. Meredith stated a little slower then I was comfortable slowing down to so I held back a little but eventually pulled away. Saw the guy I was running with at OKC and said hi to him. Hit the first mile mark at about 6:04, I was pretty relaxed and I was happy with the first mile split. The crowd carries you really well in this race for most of the way and before I knew it I was at mile 2 at 12:24 (6:20 mile). I knew I was still on pace, in my head I had figured a 6:26 pace would get me there but I was going to shoot for closer to a 6:20 pace. Meredith caught up to me around 2.5 and passed me and I picked up my speed to make sure she didn't get away. I ran about 50 feet behind her through the 5K mark at 19:40 and until just before the 5 mile mark. I was really feeling my cold at bout mile 4.5, I had junk draining down my throat and my nose had a bunch of junk in it. It was completely throwing off any rythmn I had. When I caught back up to Meredith I could tell she was getting tired. I told her we were gonna make it and then at 5 miles the guy calling splits said 33:13. I thought wow I need to move and sped up as I looked at my watch. He was off by a minute, mile 5 time was 32:13. I made sure Meredith knew and we continued to slowly speed up through the mile. Took the turn onto the final bridge, a litle after the 6 mile mark with the time just under 39 min. I could see the finish line and thought this will be easy to make now. The bridge never ended and as I got to the finish line I was going all out to get under 40. Ran into the shoot and looked at where I stopped my watch, 39:58, I barely made it. The official clock said 39:59 and I found out later that they gave awards to the top 5 in my AG. 5th place finished in 39:58. I guess there is always next year. I would have hurled in the shoots if I had eaten anything for breakfast, guess its a good thing I didn't. What would you do differently?: I think I might start out a little fast and it slows me down from about 2.5 to 4.5 miles. I to slow down a little and speed up when my body is warmed up a little more and can hold it better. Post race
Warm down: Found my buddies who cheered me in at the finish line and walked back up to the finish line to chear on our othere friends in the race. Tick came across just under 48 min, not bad for not running much in the last month and Lisa surprised us all with her race. I found a spot to watch her and didn't wait long as she showed up about 5 min earlier then expected. She PR'd this race by 4 min. Quite an improvement for 6 weeks. What limited your ability to perform faster: The cold definately and a limited amount of speed work in the last couple days. Both kept me out of any kind of rythmn I would have loved to have. Event comments: Great race, a part of the Wichita River Festival. Always a fun one to do. Last updated: 2008-02-20 12:00 AM

Woke up and drove over to Lisa's house to pick her up. Drove downtown and parked about a half mile from the start line. Jogged down to the registration area so I could register.
Walked back from getting my nuber and such and then Jogged back down toard the start line. I could feel my cold a little and my leg quad felt weird, (still kinda does, no sure why), but eventually found all my friends down there and Merideth, (also trying to get under 40min). Close to start time we took off out and back to strech the legs one last time before the gun.
