Swim
Comments: Started in the front and that seems to be working. Sighting was great and hit buoys perfectly. Many of the swimmers went really wide for the first buoy. Breathing is always hard for me for first 1/4 mile and then it is fine rest of the way. What would you do differently?: I think I would turn it on a little more for the last third. Being my fist 70.3 I wanted to make sure that I didn't kill myself. I would also check the course out better. Coming back in after the third buoy, I was not sure if I had to round another buoy or not. Need to pay as much attention to the swim course as I did to the Bike Course. Transition 1
Comments: Took a digger taking off my wet suit. Put feet into shoes and ran in shoes and then clicked into clips. First time I went without socks. What would you do differently?: Fell getting wet suit off my ankles. I think I will get down on my bottom next time to remove. I will also use my Bento box. I had two many items on the towel. Oh, and I need to make sure that I put sun-tan lotion on my back (Pre-race) Also, put on Race Belt. Forgot on Bike and Run. What a rookie. I am sure I was entertaining for a few of the veterans. Bike
Comments: I had heard a lot about the Bike Course and studied it well. Drove it the day before. It was very hilly and a challenge to say the least. Training in Santiago Canyon and riding Silverado really helped prepare me for this course (yeah, Modjeska helped too). I can also thank Larry Davidson for telling me to get a 27 gear for the ride. Using a 27 is the way to go to save your legs. This came in handy on Beach Hill (within first mile of race) and also on Nasty Grade. It was good to know I had an easy gear to fall back on. The training and knowing the course from race reports was a plus. What would you do differently?: Get faster! For my experience and fitness level, I felt that I did the ride just right. Oh, I would use the water bottles to pour water on me. Bastard of a course. Transition 2
Comments: I had two huge blisters on my arches so I took the time to put on mole skin and socks. I also needed to put gels and salt tabs in my back pocket. What would you do differently?: Remember my Race Number. Ran without it. Put gels and slat tabs in my pocket on ride (store them in Bento Box). Also, hopefully will not have blisters in next race. Run
Comments: The run was a BEAST! It kicked my butt. It was so HILLY!!!!! Hill after Hill after Hill. At MIle 9 you run down hill seeing that you have to run back up. Mentally, this about broke me. It was a cruel joke. KNowing you had to run back up made the downhill run long and dpressing I think I drank a little too much. Stomach felt a little yucky at some points. Last mile going down Lynch Hill I got my second wind and ran a sub 7:00 mile. I felt so fast and passed 3 of my age groupes and about 10 other people. What would you do differently?: Train more and build up my endurance. Post race
Warm down: None. I went right to the oranges and bananas and Gatorade with ice. The oranges tasted so good. I must have eaten about 20 slices. I did have my recovery drink of Costco EAS and Genr8 mix What limited your ability to perform faster: Training. This was not my A race and I had won a raffle so my training, especially the run, was not where it needed to be. Also, this was a huge mental test especially after mile 8. I need to get tougher in that aspect. Event comments: Wildflower is Awesome. After the race I swore I would never do this race again but the next day I was already taking about going back (when I am more fit - hehe). This race should be on any Triathletes schedule. This was my first 70.3 race and it was extremely hard, but it was exciting and very cool. The vibe was awesome and the setting and overall difficulty make this a race that I am proud to have completed. It was a great day and I would like to thank the Lord for giving me the strength to complete this race, my Father-In-Law for being my support, Larry Davidson my awesome coach and Quinton Berry for all of his help. Took sleeping pill night before. No effects in morning. Pre-race meal of a banana, protein Power Bar and 20 oz. of Infinit Jet Fuel. Put on sweats and drove to race. Oh, I should add that the night before I noticed I had two huge blisters on the inside of my arches and they were like balloons. Went to the first aid station and one had popped and I popped the other and had mole skin put on.
Rode down Lynch Hill and tried to spin. Slow jog, stretched, then did 4 sprints. Did arm stretches for swim. Swam out about 25 yards prior to race.
