Run
Comments: It was a great course. I made sure not to start too quickly and felt like I paced really well during this race. I usually wear a hydration belt, but decided I need to learn how to drink from those paper cups so just used the aid stations this time. I had a really hard time getting enough fluid as I spilled more than I actually got to drink. Definitely need to work more on this. Then at about mile 4 I had to use the port a potty AND there was a line, killed 4 minutes waiting. Watching everyone run by was frustrating, but better than the alternative :) My knee hurt off and on through the run, and I tried to focus on my form and relaxing to relieve it. At about mile 11 it became excrutiating, and I wondered if it was going to allow me to keep running, but with only two miles left I was going to keep running if at all possible, so I did. Probably not a very smart decision, but seemed like a good idea at the time. I crossed the finish line and was thrilled with my time, 5 minutes under my goal time even with the potty break! Gary was waiting just beyond the finish line and I gave him a big hug and asked how he did. He beat his goal time as well with a time of 1:55:25! What would you do differently?: Do a warm up run to try to avoid the potty break :) Learn to drink on the run from those little paper cups. Pay attention to the mild pain I was having off and on in my knee for the couple weeks leading up to the race, and doing something to address the problem before it got worse. Post race
Warm down: Grabbed a vitamin water, and walked to the food tent when I realized that my knee was now painful even walking and I could hardly bend it. We stayed and watched the awards and I drank both mine and Gary's free beer :) Then Gary drove us the 2 hours back to Kalispell. What limited your ability to perform faster: My knee, other than that I felt really great through this race. Oh.. and the potty break of course. Event comments: This is a great race, very well organized, lots of aid stations with water and powerade, great food and beverages after the race, fast course. This will definitely be on my list of races to do again, maybe even the full next year, just have to get this knee healed up. Last updated: 2008-02-25 12:00 AM

Did an easy pace OWS in Foys Lake, then packed and headed to Missoula the day before. We Went out to dinner at Bangkok thai and had fried rice, anf black sticky rice. Great food, but I ate way too much. Went to bed around 10:00pm and set the alarm for 3:45am.
Caught the shuttle bus in downtown Missoula to the half mary start. Made sure NOT to get on the full mary bus :) Hung out by the start area trying to stay warm until the sun came up. Usually my nerves kick in before a race which helps me... ummm... avoid needing to stop at porta potties during the run.;) This morning NO nerves. I felt very calm and just happy to be there... great... BUT I always need to GO when I run unless I've already done it. Oh well, at least there was porta potties at every aid station. Should have done a warm up run which may have helped, but for some reason this never occured to me and I figured I had plenty of time to warm up during the 13.1 miles.
