Pre-race routine:

Crawled out of bed at 5:30am, used the "can" and jumped on the scales buck naked at 205 lbs. My brother and I left my house at about 7am and headed south. It's about a 2 hour drive to the race start. Ate some muffin toast w/honey, grapefruit and banana for breakfast.
Event warmup:

Got parked and after picking up our pre-race packets we went back to the van and watched (DVD) the Eagles live concert in Australia. Good music always puts you in the mood to run, right?
Stan and I went out to the road and ran about 3/4 mile or so for a warmup. It was freezin cold and windy and we were trying to figure out what clothes to wear for the race. Did some more stretching, hit the port-a-potty line and headed for the race start.

Comments:

Started out in about the 2nd or 3rd row. The start was good had a headwind for about the first 1/2 mile or so. Then the wind turned to our tail. Went through mile 1 at 6:47 which was about right. The mile markers were a bit off. My splits varied by quite a bit and I wasn't varying my pace very much at all. Fastest split of the day was 6:27 at mile 5 and the slowest was 7:54 at mile 9.
I hit the turnaround at 46:16 and felt like I was running pretty conservatively. I should have run harder while I had the tailwind! After the turnaround it became pretty brutal to try and hold much of a pace. The winds were in our face at 20-30 mph. Sometimes it felt like you were running backwards. Second half split was just over 50 minutes and I had to work hard for that. All in all it was a good first experience at doing a long run race and I'll do that one again next year and hope for less wind.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Maybe should've run a faster first half w/ the wind at my back.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked over to the van and grabbed my camera and went back to the finish line to take pics and wait for Stan. Ate some donut holes, cookies and drank Gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hadn't run much since the first of the year due to a hip/leg issue. Also, been fighting bronchitis for the last week or so. I thought I was pretty much over the crud, but ended up w/ a fever and worse, for several days after the race. Still home w/ the crud (Tues) as I write this. YUCK!

Event comments:

This is a good early season race for us in the Northwest. It's a good pre-season indicator of what needs to be worked on w/ your running.
