Pre-race routine:

Ate the good ol' oatmeal and soymilk with coffee for breakfast and busted it to get to the race on time.
Event warmup:

Ran back and forth to my car and stood in the porto-potty line 3x each.
Run
  • 44m 45s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

I came out fast and tried to hold it. Was already gasping for air in mile 1 but was able to maintain a pretty constant pace despite really sucking (perceived exertion-wise) it for the last 2.5 miles.

HOWEVER, this was a huge PR for me. My stated goal was to go under 48 minutes and I thought that was a reach. 45 minutes was my super-secret goal that I admitted to no one but Natalie and I did it. Whoo!! : )
What would you do differently?:

More speed work. This race really shows me that I've not been working on my speed. I've been injured, though, so this is an awesome result and I'm hopeful that I can post a similar time at Peachtree this year if I train hard enough.

Also, try to seed myself better for the start. I made myself nervous for nothing by going too far towards the back.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked to avoid the seeing stars feeling that I had from sprinting the last few 100 yards to the finish to get in under the 45 min mark.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Conditioning, prior injury.

Event comments:

I didn't stick around for the post-race activities, but the volunteers were very nice and helped me get Doug's t-shirt because he stayed home with sick kids so I could run.

Garmin said 45:01 for 6.29 miles but the above is the official time. I started far back and forgot to hit stop at the end so that is why the mileage is long.
Course: Very lovely course in Sandy Springs. It was a beautiful day and I enjoyed the hills at the beginning and the downhill at the end. Would definitely do this race again. Awesome technical shirt and in-the-bib timing chip.
