Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:00 to start getting ready. Made some oatmeal with Honey and Strawberries in it and went into the basement so that I wouldn't wake the Mrs. Turned on the TV and watched a little 2007 IM Hawaii. Finished the oatmeal and double checked to make sure I had everything and jumped in the car to meet up with Dave, who was running late, and then head to Lake Mills. Uneventful trip there and we got a couple of good parking spots. Set up transition and just milled about and talked to a good number of fellow Donkai's as we were getting ready to go.
Event warmup:

Did about 5 miles on the bike just to make sure that everything was ready to go. Then got in the water and swam a short distance, should have gone a little longer I think now that I am looking back at it.
Swim
  • 06m 52s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not very happy with my swim. I should have been able to hammer out a better time than this. I know I shouldn't complain as I was 5th in my AG, but it just really wasn't that good.
What would you do differently?:

I dunno, this is usually where I am good, so I have no idea why in the hell I wasn't faster today.
Transition 1
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

Relatively long run from water to transition area. Felt like thing were going well, I was trying to bring my HR down after the swim, but it stayed high the whole day, so oh well.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, everything felt smooth wetsuit came off good, but I almost tripped over it which may have added a couple of seconds.
Bike

Comments:

Well, going into the race I told myself that I just wanted to hammer the bike and see what would happen. Got out of transtion and got up to speed quickly, going out of T1 there is a gradual uphill for a little while. I should have waited a little longer to get my feet into my shoes as it slowed me down a little at the beginning. Once I got rolling though I started to hammer as much as I could. HR was through the roof for most of it, but I just wanted to see what I could do if I really pushed myself on the bike. On the way in I got out of my shoes when I wanted to and had a really good dismount coming into T2
What would you do differently?:

Not much, as I was running I thought a gel might have been nice on the bike, but with how high my HR was there was no way my stomach would have taken it.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

Decent T2 for me, I missed my rack as I was running in, so that cost me some time, but nothing too bad.
What would you do differently?:

Not miss my rack.
Run
  • 22m 51s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, I started to pay for the high HR and pushing on the bike, but I really didn't care I just wanted to make it through, as you can see, this is the only area that I wasn't in the top 10 in my AG. The PF didn't help this at all as I am not really confident in my run yet. I am not sure I really could have pushed any harder. I am happy with this as it is a good time for me, but I think that I was paying for going all out on the bike, which is fine by me at this distance.
What would you do differently?:

Not really sure to be honest.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank some water and Endurox, talked to the Donk's present as well as some other friends I had doing the race and watched the awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Running, plain and simple, I am not a speedy runner. I really think that with a little more bike work I could be good at AquaVelo's as even though the running is coming along, I am just not all that fast. When I was getting off the bike it sort of felt like I stepped on something and it made me hop a little. After getting home from doing my other ride I started having some sharp pain on my left foot which was the first one down off the bike. Looked at my foot and I have about a 2 inch cut on my foot just behind my toes.

Event comments:

Great race, definitely want to make this a regular race. Also, they gave out a really nice shirt which is a definite plus.
