Swim
Comments: I chose to jump in. I didn't want to get pummeled or kicked so I waited until the people in the water let go of the rope and jumped in. I was extremely surprised at the cleanliness of the water. I was preparing to no be able to see a thing, for it to taste horribly, etc. I guess because I practice in the LI Sound, I was used to gross water. It did start to smell and taste like diesel fuel towards the end. Was stung by three jellyfish. I do not like those things. The stings went away by the time I was out of the water. I felt rather confident during the swim. No panic attacks, didn't get kicked, the field wasn't congested at all. What would you do differently?: I found myself staying to the right of the course for too long. Granted it was the best place to catch the lovely current but had to take a hard left to ensure I didn't miss the end barge or else I probably would have floated to the Statue of Liberty. Transition 1
Comments: There was a 400-500 yard barefoot run to the transition on pavement. I was not a fan. Got the suit halfway off and left my cap and goggles on during the run. My transition area was next to a fence so I leaned on that to get my suit off. Unfortunately I was also in with the relay people who didn't get the idea of staying out of the racks so people could easily get in and out. What would you do differently?: Not much, maybe run faster... Bike
Comments: I actually felt good on the bike until about mile 22. I was actually passing people! A first for me! Almost at the end I thought my arms/wrists/back were going to fall off. But just kept peddling. Also was able to drink while on the bike without tipping over! Another first during a race:) What would you do differently?: Go for longer training rides. This was the longest bike ride I had done since the Tri-boro bike in May. Transition 2
Comments: A good transition for me other than almost mowing down a relayer. Run
Comments: I kept focusing on keeping my pace and cadence steady. My strategy was to pass as many women as possible. I was only passed by a couple women along the way so I felt great about that. My goal was 10min or under miles, but I'll take it! What would you do differently?: Longer training runs. Post race
Warm down: Walked around the expo and then walked about a mile to the transition area. Packed up my bike and rode it back to the hotel, got more dirty looks from the front desk. What limited your ability to perform faster: Next year I'll do longer bike rides and runs, probably longer bricks. Keep up my swimming. Event comments: Wonderful first olympic race! I had such a fun time, even despite the logistics of getting into, around and out of NYC. The event was very organized, great enthusiasm from athletes, volunteers and spectators. I would do this again in a heartbeat! Last updated: 2008-03-12 12:00 AM

Drove in on Saturday morning to NYC from CT- my first time ever driving in the City. Made it to the hotel with no issues. Checked in and my room wasn't ready but the manager said, "we've got to get that thing out of here," referring to my bike, so she found me a clean room. Went to the race briefing and expo and then rode my bike across town to the transition area- the entire way thinking, OMG I'm riding my bike in NYC. EEK. Made it in one piece, did a transition area tour (thank goodness, it was complicated!) and then walked all the way back to the hotel.
I didn't know my hotel turned into a rave at 1 am and could feel the bass from the lobby bar echoing through my room. Loud drunk people were everywhere. Would have been fun had I not been trying to get some sleep.
The morning arrived, woke up at 4am, left the hotel with the drunk people who kept me awake. Lots of strange looks like, "why does that girl have a bike and why is she awake..."
Got to the Hilton to take the shuttle to transition but the line was ridiculous so I shared a cab with two other women. Set up my stuff in transition and walked over to the swim start.
1+ mile walk to swim start. Thankfully we could put our shoes into a bag which was delivered to the finish.
