Pre-race routine:

My buddy Mike came down from Kansas City to do this race with me. I introduced him to Triathlon last August and he has really taken to it.

I got up before my alarm went off a few minutes after 4am, took a shower, loaded my stuff and we were off to the races.

We arrived at the parking area around 5:15am where there were only a few cars already parked. We unloaded the bikes and headed to the TA. We were the first ones there and had our pick of spots. I took my preferred spot closest to the bike-out.

It was all good until I realized that I had forgotten my race number belt. Damn, I hate not having the right tools for the job.

On the bright side, for whatever reason, I just love being in and around the TA before a race. It just makes me feel good:)
Event warmup:

Made sure my bike was in the right gear, ran a few minutes and took a quick dip in the lake.

Comments:

Waded out to line up for the start. The start was delayed about 5 mins for some reason and by the time we started I was beginning to get cold.

They gave the countdown and and said GO! I started my watch this time, but forgot to start the countdown timer. Not a big deal.

I had a good start and I tried drafting about 4-5 times, but the feet I chose were all too slow. I think I would've finished a minute or two faster if I would've just done the work myself. Sighting went well except for getting a little wide one time and I rounded the first bouy pretty good and the second one great. All things considered, it was a good swim. I really enjoy a good OWS.
What would you do differently?:

I could've swam a little harder, but it went well considering my plan.

Comments:

Ran all the way to my spot, sat down, dried feet, socks on, shoes on, glasses, helmet and I'm off. I didn't put on my jersey. I was afraid the number would rip and I would loose it. I mounted and clipped in just past the line, took off and immediately realized that I didn't need my sunglasses. It was very overcast, which was good since the forcasted temps were low to mid 90's. I took my glasses off and stuck them in my helmet where the stayed for the entire time.
What would you do differently?:

I need to start practicing jumping on my bike and should've made a better sunglass decision. The lighter lenses would've been ok to wear with it overcast and good to avoid any bugs in the eyes.

Comments:

This is a good bike course. It has some good long flat stretches that are fun, one challenging hill, a few rollers and a long gradual uphill. It basically has everything.

It seemed as though nobody was paying attention to drafting rules. At first, I tried to make sure I dropped back when passed and passed others quickly. But after about 5 miles I got tired of trying so I just went for a good ride. I saw a few of my fellow Ozarks Multisport Club members and gave them a good word as they passed. It was fun.
What would you do differently?:

Take less fluid. I took a 24oz and a 20oz, but only needed the 24oz. In hindsight, I could've gone a little easier and maybe been able to run a little more, but I doubt I would've been able to run the whole thing.
Transition 2

Comments:

I had a perfect flying dismount and ran all the way to my rack spot. I didn't have my speedlaces in so I just sat down on my bucket and tied my shoes. The only problem came when I tried to get my jersey on. I knew it would be difficult and thought about asking for help:) However, I did it alone, wriggling around like Harry Houdini, I finally got it. My jersey is a littl on the small side and when wet... you know the drill.
What would you do differently?:

Speedlaces and...you guessed it...a race belt.

Comments:

Just as I had worried, my number ripped when I put the jersey on, so I just rolled it up and put it in my pocket. Did I mention that I really missed my race belt.

I tried running with a visor for the first time and even though it was overcast I was glad I had it. It worked well in keeping sweat out of my eyes.

The run started good. I felt fine and started at a good pace. However, at about 1.5-2 miles I started feeling it in my right quad/knee. Within a few hundred yards I was hurting. By mile 3 I had to start walking. I probably could've ran the entire 5 miles, but the pain would've been tremendous and the damage and/or set-back significant. I alternated walking and running about a minute each for the remaining distance.

At about mile 3.5 I started getting passed and passing a girl that was alternating running and walking too. I caught up to her, walking no less, and started walking with her and talking. I asked if she was walking due to pain or lack of fitness. She said it was lack of fitness and that she hadn't even swam since this race last year. I suggested we run/walk together so we started picking out landmarks to run/walk to. When we got close to the finish line, which was around a bend in the road we joked about needing to start running before any spectators could see us running. We started our last run and I told her to go ahead about 25 yards from the finish and then I skipped across the finish line. I felt great except for the knee pain.
What would you do differently?:

I have no idea. This is discouraging.

Muscle issues...fibrosis...whatever...

Event comments:

I like doing my two hometown races and I'll be excited to do this one again next year, but it could be so much better.

Notes: 1.) had a little pain/tightness in left hip after race which lasted about 48 hrs. possible ITB realted?
