Run
Comments: Plan was to stay with the twins, to walk the first mile to let the crowd thin a bit, jog four miles, then every man for himself for the final 1.2. When we got to the start, we waited a few seconds until the clock counted up to 8:00, then started walking. First mile was crowded, but we weaved through it with me in front and the boys trailing. Even walking, we must have passed a thousand people in the first mile. Got to the water station/clock at Mile 1 a little short of 14 minutes, and started jogging, about a 10-10:30 pace. Passed Angel just before Mile 2, shortly thereafter Dakota started to complain about knee pain. I really think he was just tired or unmotivated, but we stopped to walk a couple times. Finally he decided he would wait for mama. Turned out he was a pain for her as well, and ended up cutting the course just so he could finish. Dante' and I continued and had a great old time. He ran through all the sprinklers, waved at the costumers along the way, ate a devil dog at mile 4, and did a good job of keeping pace. At about 4.5 miles, he started to pick it up, so I gave him some last minute instructions and let him go. I also picked it up a little, but he beat me by over two minutes. I told him next year we'd train together and shoot to go below an hour. What would you do differently?: Train, if I could. This is probably the furthest I've run since Cajun Cup in November. Post race
Warm down: Found Dante' at the finish, got a water and a Gatorade and went into the stadium. Found some jambalaya, CheeWees, Zapp's chips and other goodies, then finally found Dylan, Angel and Dakota and headed to the car. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training. ;) Event comments: Best race in NO, nice course, 15,000+ participants, big party after. this has become an annual family outing. Coffee, bagel, shower, shave. Short drive to City Park, found a decent place to park even though the city had closed off the neutral ground on Marconi. The five of us got on the first bus to the Quarter and the start.
Walking on the river, then the porta potty dance. Finished the last visit and went straight to the race start.
