Pre-race routine:

Had the whole family staying with my mom because our AC was broke. Woke up at 5:30, car was already packed and the family was coming later, ate a CliffBar on the way because I didn't have my usual SlimFast shake available and niether did the gas station I tried. Setting up transition is pretty easy, just had to adjust to not having a bike rack.
Event warmup:

Rode the bike briefly to make sure everything was working. Jogged the swim to T1 a couple of times to check for any bare feet dangers. Swam 100 yards, plus a few strokes waiting to start.

Comments:

I call this an average performance, it felt good, but the time was slow. Got passed by at least 3 people, I think I passed 2 others. As I was passed I hung on to draft some. The last girl to pass me passed in the lane rather than at the wall. She was always close, but never touched my foot, so I assumed she was happy staying there and drafting. Hope she wasn't mad, but there was nice scenery when she passed. ;)
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
Transition 1
  • 03m 26s
Comments:

This didn't go well. Not having bike racks threw me. I had to put my aero bottle in after picking up the bike, then my spare goggles snagged on my handle bars. A helpful bystander pointed that out and I threw them toward my spot, but missed. Another racer tried to put them in the right place, but she went to the wrong one. I didn't want to hold either of us up any longer so I just said thank you.
What would you do differently?:

Probably just calm down and walk the goggles back myself.
Bike
  • 43m 41s

  • 16.48 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike went well enough, the climb was tougher than I remember, but the downhills were great and the traffic circles were a lot of fun. No counting issues today. I needed to pee, but just couldn't make myself on the bike, its a bit crowded and there were a lot of spectators anyway.
What would you do differently?:

Get stronger.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Much better, no problems.
Run
  • 34m 2s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

I no I'm faster than this, so its a little disapointing. I did get dehydrated and could see an ambulance in my future. I commented to a girl on the way by about hoping the water was close, I turned her down when she offered me some of hers, but I almost changed my mind and turned around.

Hit the water station, got two cups of water, but chugging wouldn't have helped, so I walked for 5 minutes to the turnaround drinking moderately, then got another cup on the way back by. This helped a lot. Second water stop I was just overheating. One cup to drink, one cup shower. The end of this run was tough last year too, but I'm not sure why.

I high fived a guy from work on his way out for the run and thought my arm was going to come off, it was more like our whole forearms collided.

Zack ran the last 100 yards to the finish with me. I'm glad it finally worked out, this is a great race for that kind of thing.

I'm disappointed in the time, but proud that I toughed it out and stayed safe.

What would you do differently?:

Drink more on the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around drinking water and Gatorde.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat and lack of consistent training.

Event comments:

I can't explain it, but this is one I hope to do year after year. I know other races that are technically better, but I just have fun here.
