Pre-race routine:

Really, it was a bad time to go and do this race. At work, we had a big grand opening of the new passenger terminal at the airport happening on July 1st. I had scheduled to be off from the 25 to the 30 of June for this race. I ended up working 14 hours a day for the week before I left just to get everything ready. This meant the taper turned into doing nothing but working. On wed, thur, and friday, before the race, I tried to just get ready the best I could. On thursday we went up and road part of the steep sections of the climb around Bachelor. Friday, I walked around Sunriver with the kids and guess what! Pulled a muscle in my calf! Umm.. yes, it does just keep getting better. Anyway, Tom, Steve, and I went up to T1 and T2 on Friday and got our gear ready. I then went home and got to bed early. I actually slept well Friday night. I guess doing a few more races has gotten me a bit more comfortable with the whole process. Also, working so much the two weeks before hand made it so I had no time to think about the race.
Event warmup:

I got up at about 6 am on Sat morning. I had a breakfast shake made with soy milk and a bannana for my morning meal. I then stretched a bit and we all headed for the lake. At the lake, I prepared the rest of my gear and then got the wetsuit on. It was already hot, so I headed for the water and spent as much time as I could being wet. Swimming around some before the start really helped get me ready for the swim.

Comments:

I had a really good start and was feeling fine but after about 50 yards some guy ran over me just as I was taking a breath. I swallowed a huge mouthful of water (better than breathing it), and I knocked out of rhythm for at least 200 yards or so. It was actually frustrating. I had purposely stayed out of the main body of swimmers and there was no reason why the guy needed to run over me. There was plenty of room for him to pass me buy. After getting swamped, I went a bit more to the outside and this, of course, slowed me down quite a bit. After about 300 yards total, I got back into a rhythm and found my pace. That pace, by the way, was actually very slow. Steve started a wave behind me and passed me up about the 1000 yard mark. I knew he was faster than me, but he really killed me!
What would you do differently?:

I needed to swim more!!! With all the work the last month, I only got in the pool once! I'm already slow, but not being in the water, well, of course made me even slower!
Transition 1

Comments:

Here's a hint! Wear ear plugs during the swim! I've always been really dizzy coming out of the swim and it slowed t1 down a lot. Earplugs made all the difference. I wasn't dizzy a bit. I knew it was going to be a hot ride, so I took sometime to drink extra liquid and take some electrolytes. Overall I could have been faster, but in the long run it didn't matter to my performance.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I could move a little faster.

Comments:

This was a great ride. I planned on taking the ride at a pace that was slower than what I knew I could do in order to save some juice for the run and for the most part stuck to my plan. The climbs were very difficult but I still could have taken them a bit harder. I tried to drink as much as I could, but it was a bit difficult. Most of the light weight riders took my on the last climb, but I passed them all on the down hill!
What would you do differently?:

In the end (after my run performance) I would have pushed it harder on the ride. I could have made up a lot more time than what I saved for later. also, more bricks!!!
Transition 2
  • 06m 21s
Comments:

I was a bit slow at T2. Again, I knew the heat was a problem so i took some time to drink and get some more electrolytes. I did have to pee and took a minute (or two) to hit the porta-pottie... Side note, it was the last time I peed for almost 24 hours. more on that later.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 3h 00m 38s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

I noted that I drank too much. I drank so much that I was cramping like mad and my stomach always felt full. I was sucking down both water and electrolyte mix. Despite this, I was still majorly dehydrated. I was so dehydrated during the run I didn't pee for 24 hours afterwards. I also dumped as much water over my body as I could. I'm not sure if it was the heat or the sucky preparation, but my calf pulled again in the run and ended up hobbling me for most of the course.
What would you do differently?:

Train more and harder. Overall I'm proud of myself just for finishing, but I really don't like being soooo far in the BOP
Post race
Warm down:

Cool down and drink more.. and more

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough training and the heat.

Event comments:

I had a great time, despite the heat. I just need to train harder!
