Swim
Comments: Since swimming is my weakest of the 3 sports and that I had about 69 miles to complete after the swim, my goal was to take it easy and tried to be comfortable in the water. Last weekend at Breezy Pt Triathlon, I had a horrible swim due to lack of open water swimming and using a new wet suit. I did 3 open water swims since then which helped a great deal. I actually really enjoyed the swim. I was happy with the temperature and kept telling myself that I better enjoy it because this was the coolest I was going to be all day long. What would you do differently?: not much- have spent a lot of time this winter working on swim technique and still suck. I need to get better on the bike and it wont matter as much:). Compared to everyone else, my swim wasn't very good, but I was happy with it. Transition 1
Comments: I was 7th a/g and 161 overall in T1.... nice. I took my wetsuit off right after getting out of the water instead of at the transition area. It was a long run to T1 and it was pretty warm out already. I think most people ran in the wetsuit which I felt would just make me too hot. I think it was a smart move. Took a few seconds to spray sunscreen on the back of my neck where my wetsuit was rubbing. For the first time in a race, I decided to keep my shoes on the bike and put them on while riding. Had a tough time getting them on esp my left shoe. Need to get more speed going before trying to put them on. Lesson of the day! What would you do differently?: practice getting my shoes on while on the bike. Bike
Comments: I was getting passed by EVERYONE on the bike portion of the race. I got passed by people on rode bikes and people on piece of crap bikes. I even got passed by someone who had the same bike as my old Specialized bike, with the clip on aerobars. Pretty embarrassing when your riding a nice bike with nice wheels and wearing an aero-helmet. Well, at least I looked good... The temp wasnt bad the first half. At the halfway point, I was over it. Everything started hurting, I was getting tired, and I was still getting passed by EVERYONE. I drank a ton on the bike, ate 4 gels and probably 1/2 to 3/4 of a Cliff Bar. The water/Gatorade handoffs on the bike were new to me- I alternated water with Gatorade. Got drinks at each stop. Again, I was actually quite happy with my bike portion of the race, considering lack of training. The water and Gatorade they gave you were in regular sports bottles that you buy at the store, Didnt fit nicely in my water holders- one actually fell out and hit the spokes of my back wheel. Almost made me crash. What would you do differently?: Actually do some endurance training on the bike this time. I did one 55 mile ride and a couple 40 mile rides this year- not good enough! Transition 2
Comments: 26th a/g and 492 overall. I was really tired and hot at this point, so having a good T2 wasn't a big concern for me. I actually sat down, wiped my feet off with a towel, and put socks on (all 3 new to me). I also sprayed sunscreen on myself before the run What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: This was the longest 13.1 miles of my life. I am slow enough in the swim and bike, to be unfortunate enough to run when it was really freaking hot. I think I started my run around 11:45AM. I typically don't mind the heat, but we have had a very cool Spring so there was no chance to get acclimated to the 95 plus temp. I believe everyone else was having the same problem because the majority of people I saw were walking. I basically ran from water station to water station. They had ice- that was a beautiful thing and the only reason I survived the run. I would drink some of the ice water (yes they gave you ice water), pour it over my head, then dump a cup of ice down the front and back of my trisuit. I would hold ice cubes in my hands when I was running. My sports bra was full of ice almost the whole run and would make a clinging noise as I ran. At one of the water stations I actually peed on myself. Thats a first. Pretty gross! They had Pepsi at the water stops and I drank one near the end of my run. It was the best damn Pepsi I ever had!! At one point in the first half of the run, I noticed that I had goose bumps and was worried I was getting heat stroke so I slowed down. Got to the half way point and was really happy, but the second half of the race went on forever. At one point someone yelled "only 3 miles to go" and I thought for sure it couldn't be that far... maybe it was 3/4 miles. No- it was 3 miles. Felt sick to my stomach most of the run. I really didn't enjoy it at all! What would you do differently?: Nothing- I was in survival mode. I am just glad I didn't die! Post race
Warm down: Warm down... are you supposed to do a warm down?!?!?! I just stopped immediately after crossing the finish line and tied not to throw up. What limited your ability to perform faster: lack of training, the heat wave that weekend Event comments: Overall I really liked this race. It was freaking HOT, the run and bike course was boring, but I did like the race. Last updated: 2008-03-19 12:00 AM

drank, drank, drank till I couldn't drink anymore. Had a redbull, and whole wheat bagel with peanut butter in the morning. Drank Gatorade Endurance pre-race and the evening before as well.
None, missed chance to do warmup swim because I was watching the pros exiting the water. Didn't want to put my wet suit on too soon and overheat. I figured it was going to be a long day and a warmup swim wasn't going to make a difference.
