Pre-race routine:

Got up around 4:15am (2:15am AZ time) to meet Erin116 and CyclistTtuRunTris in the lobby. Had some coffee and an energy bar and I was ready. Got to the parking lot and hopped on a bus to the event. Bikes were checked in on Saturday, so I set up my transition area and headed down to check the lake temp.
** Leading up to the event, the lake was in the mid- to hi 80's. They said there was no way it would be wetsuit legal. I made the decision to not even bring mine. Miracoulously, the temps somehow dropped to 77.5 degrees and the race was wetsuit legal (more on this later).
Event warmup:

Some stretching and facility use..

Great idea - - this is the first race I've been to where they have a yoga instructor to lead anyone who wants to in some pre-race stretches. I was going to do it, but the port-a-potty line was too slow.
Swim
  • 29m 52s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

77.5 degrees? No way. This lake was warmer than my Y pool. Glad I didn't have my wetsuit as I may have been tempted to wear it. I think one could've easily overheated wearing one.
The course was probably short 200 meters, but this is still my best tr- swim. I pushed it, my navigation, sighting, and drafting were the best I've ever done.
What would you do differently?:

Not much here...I'm very happy with my performance.
Transition 1
  • 03m 16s
Comments:

This was a very big transition area and it wasn't that close to the lake. It took a long time to get from one side to the other.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe run a little more in my bike shoes through T1
Bike
  • 3h 03m 12s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.34 mile/hr
Comments:

Clearly, this is still my weakest of the 3. I was worried that I was going to fast for me and that I was burning up my legs for the run. Who knows if I could've run faster if I'd ridden slower.
This course was tough. Very hilly (I guess this is why Lance Armstrong trains around here) and the wind was tough - -even the pros commented on the wind and the heat. Still, for me, I am very happy with my bike ride. I was hoping for 3 hrs and fell just shy, but with the wind and hills, I'll take it.
What would you do differently?:

Train for more hills if I was going to do this course again.
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

T2 was faster! Again, the transition area was huge with all the people racing, but I had no trouble racking my bike or finding my spot. Grabbed my shoes and my hat -- and i was gone.
Run
  • 2h 07m 46s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

This was a very tough course - - thankfully there were plenty of aid stations with water, gatorade, sponges, etc. It was hot, windy, and hilly on paved roads, dirt trails, and grass trails.
Big warning sign - - QUADZILLA AHEAD! - - many people just walked up. There were many hills and you had to hit them all twice. A little disappointed im my pace, but it was a tough course and my first HIM. Could I have run faster? I talked with someone who's 1/2 mary time is 1:38, but said this course takes him 2:05! Puts the difficulty into perspective. That said, I should be happy with my 2:07 (I am).
What would you do differently?:

I would have loved to have a faster split on the run, but I'm happy with my physical and mental performance.

Post race
Warm down:

Met my wife at the finish line and walked around. Head and core felt great, but my legs and feet were shot. Went though the athlete's food tent to grab some nourishment and then sat down to replenish

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat? I'm used to it in Arizona, but parts of this race were really hot on the run.
The wind? Certainly had to help and hurt on the bike. Seemed like it was more headwind than tailwind.

Event comments:

Great race and great people! Lots of team tailgating areas and tons of spectators. This event is set up and run very well. The start was delayed a little, but it was great for my first HIM.
