Age Group Rank = 39/48
Pre-race routine:

up at 5:15am. Free hotel continental breakfast. Packed Car. Drove to race site. Set up TA in 5 min. Walked around. Took 2 salt tablets. Ate a gel when the first wave started.
Event warmup:

set up BT tents. Dipped in the water for a couple minutes. Water is warm. Talked to people.
Swim
  • 30m 31s
  • 1500 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

decided to wear the wetsuit at the last minute. The swim felt average. Got kicked a few times and hooked arms with someone doing backstroke. Rounded 2nd bouy a little slower than I wanted. A blue cap swimmer (the wave before?) would sprint pass me and 50 yd later slowed down for me to pass. That went on for 2/3 of the swim. Got caught at the shallow area at the last 1/4 of the swim. Cratched fingers. Took it easy most of the time thinking I can make up the lost minute or 2 on the bike.

2006 = 27:46
2007 = 29:49
2008 = 30:31
What would you do differently?:

Will be nice to have a sleeveless suit. And not get caught in the shallow area.

Transition 1
  • 04m 11s
Comments:

Rehearsed T1 toward the end of the swim. Hi-5'ed the all Graves (KathyG's family) at swim out. Watch was loose during the swim. Dropped it when pulling wetsuit sleeve out. Didn't bother to look for it. Told volunteers to keep an eye on a watch. Straight forward T1. Spents some time putting on sunblock, especially on shoulders and back of neck - sort of burnt at Mooseman. swallowed a couple salt tablets.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike

Comments:

Best bike split evah!

Hopped on bike feeling strong. Put on the big ring and tried to maintain a high cadence. Road were cracked and uneven most of the way. Saw jamjam a few riders ahead. Pushed somewhat. Stayed at the drop most of the time. Drank gatorade ~ every 3 miles.
Mile 5: passed jamjam.
Mile 8.5: jamjam passed me. This becomes the theme on the bike: chasing her, keeping her within a distance, at times as close as 25 yards.
Mile 13: finished a bottle of gatorade. Ate 1/2 gel. Switched bottle positions - the empty one went to the back cage. Kept gatorade in front cage for easy access.
Mile 14.5: bottle exchange - threw away empty one. Got a fresh bottle of water.
Mile 15.5: passed jamjam. Took me over 7 miles to chase her down. She had surgery not long ago. She is a tough cookie.
Mile 18: jamjam overtook me yelling "com'on!" and left me eating her dust.
Mile 20: legs felt heavy. Speed noticebly slower.
Mile 23.5: scott passed. I shouted "what takes you so long to get here? Should have passed me long ago!!"

2006 = 1:28:43 (16.91 mph)
2007 = 1:26:58 (17:18 mph)
2008 = 1:25:25 (17:49 mph)

What would you do differently?:

nothing. Happy with splits

Transition 2

Comments:

Standard T2
Took salt tablets. Ate remaining gel. Took albuterol - forgot before bike and felt chest heaviness toward bike end. Grabbed banana.
Ran out of chute, flare up my arms to greet a trifury guy and marmadaddy. In marmadaddy's video you'll see me waving the banana. Hi-5'ed isis and pjostak
Run
  • 1h 05m 3s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 10m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Did not walk.

piriforms tight but not sore. Took it easy the first mile, eating the banana slowly. For a long while I was hold half the banana - couldn't swallow properly.

Mile 0.5: a guy singing from behind. Saw his ipod as he ran by. Told him to take it off or to get a penalty. He said "that's ok... I am not going to win". WTF?? shouted from his back "still, a rule is a rule!"
Mile 1: Angry at that headphone dude. Looked around to distract myself. Saw scott. Poked him at his back to scare him. He was battling with side stitch. I took off.
Mile 1 water station: finished banana and threw peel into a box full of water ready to be handed out. Backed up to retrieve peel, threw into proper bin.
Mile 1.5: SunnyS passed me.
Mile 2: tri_again came up from behind. Chatted. Then she took off.
Mile 2.5: passed jamjam. Got side stitches. Ran with left arm above head to stretch. Went away shortly.
Mile 3: asked the water station volunteers "are we there yet?"
Mile 4: talked more silly stuffs with random people e.g commented on how good looking a neighborhood dog was. Pour water over body at drink station.
Mile 5: chanted "I'm almost there". Pour more water over body. Ate an orange slice.
Mile 6: 2 bigger guys overtook me saying "you're not letting 2 fat guys passing you like this, are you?". I replied "go ahead".
Turn into park: one of the big guys said "where is the finish?" I replied "you still have 0.2 miles after mile 6." "What?" "10k is 6.2 miles" "argh!"
Finishing chute: The 2 big guys slowed down. Saw the BTers, picked up pace to hi-5 them. Realized I was leveled with the 2 guys. Ended up finished 2 steps ahead right at the arch when they both yelled "HEY!!!" to which I replied "wasn't intentional".

2006 = 1:07:57 (10:58 min/mile)
2007 = 1:09.05 (11:16 min/mile)
2008 = 1:05:03 (10:49 min/mile)
What would you do differently?:

Good run splits, too. Happy.
