Swim
Comments: It felt a little like being in a washing machine at times! I did a lot more sighting than I planned on but it helped me stay on course. Needless to say, I was sufficiently hydrated going into the bike.... What would you do differently?: Practice more open water swimming. Transition 1
Comments: There is a pretty far (from what I hear) distance from the end of the measured swim up to the beach, and then the run up from the beach to transition was about 100m. I got the wetsuit off pretty easily along with my cap and goggles. My bike gear went on quickly but when running out of transition there is a slight incline and I clipped in on one side and went to clip in on the other, but somehow my chain was off the gears!!! AHH! I had a minor freak out as I did a slow-motion tumble on my side since I was attached to the bike. I regrouped quickly and got my chain back on in under a minute, but that ate up some time! Not to mention falling in front of everyone leaving transition... What would you do differently?: Practice, practice, practice! I'd also ride my bike a little before the race to make sure everything is intact! Bike
Comments: The bike got a little congested around the sprint/du turnaround and I had to almost come to a complete stop to not cause an accident! What would you do differently?: Push myself a little harder and use my aerobars more. Transition 2
Comments: This transition went much more smoothly than the first, but I ran with my bike shoes on which is not an easy task! My parents also came to watch and found my over in the transition area and were chatting and trying to take pictures, so that took some extra time :o) What would you do differently?: I'd like to practice getting off the bike leaving my shoes clipped in. Run
Comments: Although I am not a fast runner, I have the most experience with running out of the 3. I've done several long-distance races in the last few years so I was comfortable in the run. I was pleased to run under an hour for the 10k--that was not expected! My parents and boyfriend (who did the Du) were at the finish chute so that helped me finish strong :) What would you do differently?: nothing. Post race
Warm down: stretching, walking, Ibuprofen and food! What limited your ability to perform faster: lack of experience (this was my first Tri) and not practicing transitions. Event comments: Great and numerous volunteers! The race ran out of medals by the time I finished :( but gave out lots of awards for age-group, etc. It was well-organized but it seems like that with the event growing, the sprint/du bike course should be separate from the oly for logistics reasons. Woke up at 5am to have some coffee, a powerbar, a banana and OJ. Had bags packed the night before (since this was my first Tri, I didn't want to forget anything!). Left from Traverse City around 6am and arrived in Interlochen with about an hour to set up for transition & get the wetsuit on.
Just some stretching, nothing too involved. Wanted to make sure I had enough energy to make it the whole way!
