Sunny
Total Time = 3h 03m 18s
Overall Rank = 2388/3549
Age Group = 45-50
Age Group Rank = 229/284
Pre-race routine:

Could not sleep night before. First Oly. Last time I looked at clock was 12:44am. Awoke at 4:15. Ate a banana and a Clif bar for breakfast (not enough). Drank 18 ounces of water. Made the trek to St Pete from Tampa.
Event warmup:

Met some friends in transition. We all said "leave it all on the course", little did I know how prophetic that statement was.
Swim
  • 36m 21s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 25s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swimming is definitely my weakest leg. Only had a few segments of good side to side breathing. Based on other comments I think I did ok. I expected to be in at around 30-32mins.
What would you do differently?:

More practice in currents and choppy water.
Transition 1
  • 03m 37s
Comments:

Too long messing with socks and Garmin.
What would you do differently?:

Next time bare footing it. Leaving shoes on bike.
Bike
  • 1h 17m 22s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.27 mile/hr
Comments:

This is the area where I have improved the most. Going out was very fast with slight tail wind. There were three different people I paced with over the course which really helped. Dismount was terrible. The brick road made me forget to get out of my shoes so I had to run in Zeros (not fun since I was at the other end of T2).
What would you do differently?:

Need to get out of shoes sooner.
Transition 2
  • 03m 48s
Comments:

Changed socks. took too long.
What would you do differently?:

Bare foot.
Run
  • 1h 02m 13s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Did not take in enough fluids on bike. Lost legs just before end of race. Started to get space head about 5.5 miles into it. I was pushing it very hard. Tried to drink Gatorade and cool with water. Did not want to slow down though. HR was at 187 mile 5, 188 mile 6, and 197 for last leg. Thought I was closer to 3 hr mark so was pushing beyond my limits. Lost legs on first finish mat and had to drag myself to second mat to finish race (pretty embarrassing) not the way I wanted to finish. I think my 2:00 min penalty was due to blocking finish line.
Oh well... I emptied the tank and left everything I had on the course.

What would you do differently?:

Get more sleep. DRINK, DRINK, DRINK.
Post race
Warm down:

Cool down with wet towels. Drank 4 bottles of Gatorade. Walked around chatted with friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of fluids. Bad T1/T2. Did not get enough sleep.
Overall very pleased. This is only my third race (first oly). Just started Sept 2007.

Keep reading BT. You guys are great!!

Event comments:

Very well organized.
