Total Time = 1h 12m 24s
Overall Rank = 63/231
Age Group = M 30-34
Age Group Rank = 10/27
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:30. Ate some banana risotto and sipped on water. Arrived at race site around 7:30.
Event warmup:

10 minute run. Took a very quick (2 minute) dip in the frigid waters just to get the engine running. COLD!
Swim
  • 09m 29s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

Tough swim. Sighting was way off, so I swam off course a lot. It's like I forget all my drills when I get out there. Frustrating.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more open water swims. I think the novelty causes me to forget good technique. Practice sighting more.
Transition 1
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

Suit got stuck on my watch. May need to cut it back 1/2 inch. Feet were completely numb after swim, making the run up to the transition really tough. Need to work on this
Bike
  • 39m 13s
  • 11.99 miles
  • 18.34 mile/hr
Comments:

Tougher than expected bike course, and it took me a while to warm up after swim. Feet never thawed, so it felt like rocks at the bottom of my legs. Did a good job staying in aero bars, despite little time in them this season
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on climbing. It's getting better.
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

Dismounted while still moving for the first time, which really smoothed out the transition. The odd bike racks weren't too hard to manage.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on dismount
Run
  • 20m 47s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

This is a PR! It felt like I was crawling, but I've never pulled a sub-7 pace for anything longer than a short interval! I'm very surprised and happy with this.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on transitions. Running hard off a hard ride is different than running hard off an easy ride.
Post race
Warm down:

Coughing fit kept me from doing much cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I prefer a little longer race, where you can settle into a pace more.

Event comments:

Many of the volunteers didn't cheer people on, and at one point I had to stop and ask for direction because they weren't paying attention. The crowd was pretty quiet, too. Few people on the course, and a lot of people weren't cheering in the late-comers. Disappointing.
