Swim
Comments: Although it was tiring, I was very proud of myself to finish! I did way too much breast stroke, but I will improve that for the next one. What would you do differently?: Have more confidence in my crawl, put my head down and swim Transition 1
Comments: I was in no hurry, just happy to finish and to see that I was in before my training partner/neighbor (who was generally a stronger swimmer) so my slow T1 allowed me to wait for my training partner, my wife and another friend What would you do differently?: be more organized and 'hustle' throuh the transition Bike
Comments: I ate 1/2 balance bar every 45 minutes. Never lacking for strength; was happy that I finished with some strength for the run I was secretly not going to finish. What would you do differently?: trained a little better for the hills and the distance. I can do about 1-1.5 mph faster next time. Transition 2
Comments: Got in and out pretty fast for me; my whole 'team' was there at the same time, so we got out on the run together. What would you do differently?: Not much Run
Comments: OK this is where it got interesting. after 1 mile the sciatic went out on my left leg so I decided to walk; felt better ran about 3 minutes and sciatic went out again; I kept telling myself that I could quit at any time and I could still say I tried. At some point I decided "Hey I didn't traing this long and come this far to quit! I can walk it if necessary"; I set my watch for a repeating 2 minute timer - every time the watch went off I alternated from running to walking. It worked. Also, at every water station on the run, I took a bunch of ice and put it into my hat and let it melt as I ran off to the next stop - this was key to avoiding overheating. I was one of the last runners to finish, but I finished and I couldn't have felt more psyched! I'll be back to give it a much better try next time. What would you do differently?: Train better, more strenght training during prep periods and through out the training; follow a more specific training regimine Post race
Warm down: to tired to warm down! What limited your ability to perform faster: Sciatic pain in left leg Event comments: Not sure who recommended this, but I'm glad they did. It was very well run. During my run, I got a chance to see what the back of the packers experience, and even at my 12+ pace, the volunteers were still there supporting me at every station. Even the elites who were already driving home would offer encouragement as they left the state park. I'll come back as often as possible. Last updated: 2008-03-27 12:00 AM

We visited the state park the night before and having never done a HIM we were a little freaked by the swim distance. Due to a nagging injury that kept me from running during the finaol 3-4 weeks I was secretly planning on not doing the race, but I wasn't going to tell my wife who was super nervous (about the swim) so I just played along during the morning preparations. Loaded the van in the dark and drove to the park. Set up the transition area - people were very friendly and helpful.
Not much. By this time I couldn't back out, and so I figured I would just swim, bike and bag the run. So to warm up we did just anything to keep the nerves at bay.
