Pre-race routine:

Got up around 4:30am, dressed and loaded the bikes. Both my husband and I were competing. The kids were staying home w/ Nana. Grabbed some breakfast at 7/11. A kashi bar, oj and a banana. Plus munched a few almonds.
Event warmup:

After getting set up and having too wait 1 hr. before my swim time, I didn't get a whole lot of warmup. I did jog around a large parking once to loosen the legs.
Swim
  • 12m 35s
  • 400 meters
  • 03m 09s / 100 meters
Comments:

Well I knew I sucked at swimming. And I wasn't even stopping and resting. Not much to say exceot this is easily my area for most improvement. At little tough in a 50m when I was used to a 25m pool. At least I wasn't expecting much from this phase. Goal was 10:30 missed it by 2 min.
What would you do differently?:

I focused the last few weeks on swim clinics and not enough on laps. Need to find a better balance.
Transition 1
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

Good transition - my split was slower than I thought but I couldn't have gone too much faster. I had everything laid and my gel/water bottle open and ready to go. I ran in and out w/ my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Just need more practice.
Bike
  • 40m 24s
  • 12 miles
  • 17.82 mile/hr
Comments:

Awesome bike. I think the best I could have done for my current conditioning. I attacked the downhills - no braking exceot for the sharp turns. Did pretty good on the tough climb (3 times). Pedaled hard to the end. Very happy with bike. Just 24 seconds off of my stretch goal. Easily inside of my basic goal.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on the Arlington hills to get stronger at climbing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Another good transition but I rushed it and it left me winded for the run. I think 30 extra seconds in transition would have let me run 30+ seconds faster per mile on the run. Time was right on target for basic goal.
What would you do differently?:

Walk some to catch breath, bring the heart rate down
Run
  • 30m 45s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

The course took me by surprise. I kept wondering if there were any flat spots and seemed like fewer downhills then uphills. That said I pushed through it. Legs felt good but I had real trouble w/ my breathing which prevented me from going faster. Had trouble eating my Luna gels. I basically mashed them in my teeth and let them dissolve. :-)
What would you do differently?:

Not much except walk in beginning to catch my breath if necessary
Post race
Warm down:

Not much - little stretching. Felt good.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more base training. I'm just hitting the 1 year mark so I'm getting a decent base to build upon.

Event comments:

Very pleased w/ my first tri of the year. Last year I did 2 and was in the bottom third of overall women and age group. At Reston I was in the top half of both. I'm ready to attck the Hagerstown course. I beat my basic goal time of 1:27:30 by 16 seconds.
