Swim
Comments: Does this count as a personal best if I walked 2/3 of it? The water was so shallow we walked to the first bouy, swam to the second and just past and then walked the rest of the way in. I was so bummed cuz I wanted to put all the pool time to good use. When I was able to swim I would site an open place and took a couple of strokes only to find I am on top of someone. I also couldn't find my breathing. I think that was due to the choppiness (if that is a word). Anyway, that wetsuit rocks! I didn't even have to kick. Just sort of floated along and swam faster cuz of it. Woohoo. What would you do differently?: I should have started in the back so I could actually swim. Let the big mass go out in front of me. Next time. Transition 1
Comments: I took the top of my wetsuit off while walking out of the water, so I am not sure how this time sucked so bad. I think it was because I thought my zipper went down farther and kept futzing with it and finally decided to just pull off the suit how it was. Sat down to put on socks and shoes, grabbed number, glasses and helmet and ran out of transition. I knew I was taking a bit of time so I could catch my breath from the swim but I didn't think I was taking that long. What would you do differently?: Not take so long. Recover my breathing on the bike. Bike
Comments: LOTS OF HILLS. Country roads, most in good condition but some areas were a bit bumpy. Lots of climbing and looking forward to the downward action and then stimied. At the bottom of most hills you had to put on the brakes to turn a corner only to climb another. BUMMER. I did get to yell "Wheeeee" on a couple. My new bike rocks as well. Cool to cruise past some bikes without even trying. I thought I passed a bunch of people, but according to my standings alot of people passed me. My bike ride definately needs some improvement. I get confused on the gearing. Gotta work on that too. It was cool to see Clint going off on his Oly bike portion of the race when I was coming in. What would you do differently?: Work on gearing. Get faster. Transition 2
Comments: This time was a bit slow cuz I accidently knocked over the bike next to me. I tried to pick it up cuz she was a sweet girl, but gave up after a few seconds. It was a heavy mountain bike. Her first time. What would you do differently?: Not worry about a bike that fell. Run
Comments: Did I say hills? Yes, lots of hills. I felt great though cuz I was passing people left and right. My endurance training for my earlier half mary sure did pay off in that respect. I didn't go out too fast cuz I wanted to make sure I would make it in the heat. It was probably up to about 85 by now with about 110% humidity. Sun still shining. NO MILE MARKERS. Very frustrating. Was I running too fast or too slow. Evidently by my time, too slow. Asked a few volunteers and they had no clue. Asked one last woman and she said about .75 mile to go. Well, that excited me, started my finishing kick. Um, that was about .75 miles to go to the turnaround that would take you to the finish. It was more like over a mile to go. Oh well, I just kept treking along. Tried to encourage people to keep going, lots of walkers cuz of the heat I am sure, and wanted to stop myself. I think those people hated me by then. Made sure I ran over the finish line with a smile for the photo op. What would you do differently?: Run faster. Post race
Warm down: Lots of water. Lots of water. Lots of water. Ate a banana and some ice cream. Walked back to transition and stretched while waiting for Clint to come in from his Oly bike. What limited your ability to perform faster: Heat, waves, hills. Event comments: Definately need mile markers on the run portion of the race. Also, lack of garbage cans. Good amount of volunteers and port-a-johns. Educate route volunteers on the course so they can tell people where they were in the scheme of things. Great post race party. Chicken satee and egg rolls, ice cream, beer, water, bagels and fruit. Music playing pre and post race. Face painting and bouncy room for kids. Overall a challenging race but good. Up by 5, couldn't sleep, as usual. Got dressed, packed up and out the door we went. Stopped to get water for me, coffee for Clint and gas for car. Station wasn't open yet..what? Sign says 5:30 and it is 5:45. Someone slept in. Off to Middleton found a PDQ that was open. Filled up everything. Off to the park. Ate my poptarts and drank lots-a water. Got a close parking spot. Sweet. Bright sunny morning and not a cloud in the sky.
If you can count wriggling into the wetsuit a warm up then that is what I did:)
