![]() Swim
Comments: Good swim with a good bit of bumping, grabbing and grouping. Navigation was a bit off since it was my first OWS of the year, but I was able to accomplish what I set out and not be to far back heading into the bike. What would you do differently?: Sight better and go a bit harder in the first 200 yds. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Had a decent run back to the transition areas, but all in all it was a decent transition. One sock got hung up for a second but nothing major. Putting my gloves between the water bottle and the head tube worked well, and there were no issues putting them on while riding. Probably could do the race without the camel back, but it had multi-tool, tube and CO2. Used my normal MTB nutrition on the bike with HEED in the bottle, water in the camel bak, and shot bloks in the singlet. What would you do differently?: Maybe no camel back to speed things up. ![]() Bike
Comments: Had a very good bike, but ended up paying for it on the run, which was the plan. I was able to pass a good number of people prior to hitting the singletrack, which was the plan and I was able put time on everyone in my AG and remain in contact with the guy leading our AG. Bike setup was nearly perfect since it was very similar to a course back home. The only thing I could have done different was run a higher pressure in the fork. What would you do differently?: Given the circumstances leading up to the race, sprained ankle = no running for three weeks, not much. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Nothing majior, just your typical transistion. ![]() Run
Comments: All I can say is that it hurt and the inability to run leading up to the event hurt. I just pushed as hard as I could, but my legs just had nothing. Ankle was sore from the steep hill at the beginning. Ended up being my worst competitive run ever, but I was able to put enough time on the bike between 4th but not the guy who ended up in second in my AG. What would you do differently?: Not sprain my ankle leading up to the event so I could actually train and run pain free. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Quick spin on the bike, about 2 miles of road, and ice on the ankle. What limited your ability to perform faster: I would like to say my ankle, but I would not have gone so hard on the bike, so maybe it evened out. Event comments: I was impressed by the race. Everyone was great, and laid back. Corse was what you would expect in the sand hills of NC, and it was in great shape. Last updated: 2008-03-31 12:00 AM

Got up at 4:30 am to drive up to the race. Got there in plenty of time, around 7:00, to pick up my packet and set things up. the only glitch was that they accidently had the wrong numbers showing on one of the bike racks, that just happen to be mine. No big deal, they got it straightened out in plenty of time and there was more then enough room.
I went into the race with it being labeled as an "A" race. The only issue was that a bad sprained ankle two weeks prior meant that I had done very little running during that time. I was able to ride the trainer after a few days, but no MTB. Based on friends reports from the race last year, I was told that this is coarse favors a cyclist so I decided early last week to go just hard enough on the swim to try to alleviate any congestion heading into the single track, and then hammer on the bike since it is my strongest leg. Mentally I was prepared for the pain in the run.
Quick jog down to the lake from the transistion area and an approximate 300 yd swim.
