Pre-race routine:

Not much of a routine today. I drove in from Akron, leaving at 4:50AM and arriving at the University at about 7:10. Ate a PowerBar at 5:30AM which was the extent of my eating prior to the event.
Waited in line for registration which was VERY cold.
Event warmup:

No warmup today other than stretching.
Swim
  • 07m 27s
  • 375 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

Pretty good swim for me today. I don't know that I would do anything different. As this is my worst leg of the tri, and I improved by 2 minutes over the tri in Miami 2 weeks ago, I was happy with the results.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I went against my saying of "don't do anything different on race day" and it cost me here. I had my shoes pre-clipped into my peddles thinking that it would speed up my transition. It did, in fact speed up the transition, but I NEVER got my feet totally comfortable and fully tightened during the whole race.
What would you do differently?:

DON'T pre-clip my shoes into the peddles or at least have SIGNIFICANT practice before doing it again.
Bike
  • 00m
  • 10.5 miles
  • 0.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Overall a pretty good ride today. I was never passed, and did a lot of passing. I finally figured out the "right shifting" going up the hill on the 3rd or 4th lap.
What would you do differently?:

Shoes were never on properly, and I was messing with them almost the whole race...this really cost me.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Pretty good transition. I stayed away from the chaos in the bike racks, and had my bike leaning against a tree right by the transition mat. A little trouble getting my shoes off.
Run
  • 00m
  • 2.5 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

Overall the run was fine. I started having calf-cramping right off the beginning of the race, which led to a slow first lap. I had negative splits each lap and felt that I didn't leave too much on the course.
What would you do differently?:

Probably needed a little to drink...I had nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked it off and stretched a fair amount.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I thought today was pretty representative of my ability with the exception of the "shoe debacle". Realistically, however, the shoe issue maybe only cost me 20-30 seconds.

Event comments:

I thought this was a well-run race. Nicely organized, VERY friendly staff, and a nice course.

Course: A fairly hilly 1.5 mile loop that we did 7 times. Almost the entire first half was uphill (actually requiring "granny" gear at the very top of the hill, leading into a VERY fast descent for almost the remainder of the loop. Probably 1/4 mile of "flat" after the descent before the uphill started again.
