Pre-race routine:

Left for High cliff on Thursday night to camp with Craig and the kids for a few days before the race. Had a few beers and good times with the Donks on Saturday night. Then Sunday morning at 4:30a.m. the fun began. Got my transition bag ready, ate my PB bagel, banana and decaf coffee. Loaded the bikes and headed down to transition. Road my bike around a bit to make sure it was ready to go, mixed my perp then headed over to rack my bike. Met up and chatted with a few donks.
Event warmup:

Got my wetsuit on and went for a swim in the lake which looked like pea soup!!

Comments:

Took it nice and easy. Was determined to beat my 51:25 time that I had in Kansas the weekend before which I did!! My sighting was on..stayed close to the buoys. Felt comfortable and had a great swim!

Not sure why it takes me so long in T1...it seems to take me forever to put my socks on.
Bike

Comments:

Started out strong..felt great after the swim. Drank my perp and downed a couple of gels and was good to go. Really felt the wind on this ride. Easy course compared to Kansas. I think I could have pushed it a bit harder if it weren't for the wind.

Legs felt incredible off the bike. I was ready to run! Considering I had just done HIM Kansas, I was really surprised how great I felt overall.

Comments:

Started out with a slow pace. Just trying to get my legs stretched out. Overall my nutrition was good and everything seemed to be going fine until about mile 8..my breathing started feeling funny and my throat started closing. Got really scared since this had never happened to me before. And I was pretty much alone on the shaded trail for the moment, but I knew if I needed help Craig was a few minutes behind me. I stopped to walk and was trying to breath like the doctors had taught my daughter when she was diagnosed with sports induced asthma. My breathing got better and I decided to start a slow jog again. Got to the finish line and was so happy that I had completed my second HIM this year!! Thanks Peggy for being there to cheer me on..it meant a lot. :)

Warm down:

Got my medal, drank some gatorade and went over to talk to Peggy. We were waiting for Craig to finish, when all of a sudden my throat started to close again. This time much worse. I struggled to breath and was of course starting to get anxious. I walked around for a while hoping it would get better, but I just couldn't catch my breath. It just got worse. Looked around for Craig and we decided that I needed to go the the Emergency Room to get looked at. Was wheezing all the way to the hospital struggling to breath and was really scared. Once we got there they started me on this breathing thingy and they put in an IV to get me some fluids (was a bit dehydrated I guess). Did a chest x-ray then took some blood to run some tests to make sure I didn't have a DVT. Only because I have a history of DVT(embolism). About 3 yrs ago, I had had a blod clot in my calf and 6 small clots broke off and traveled to my lungs. So they were just trying to rule that out. About 4 hours later all the test came back ok they decided that I had some sort of bronchial/asthma attack. I was completely relieved that that was all it was. So I now have an inhaler just in case. Anyway Craig and I left finally left the emergency room completely cold and exhausted. We headed back to the camp ground to get some sleep.

Event comments:

As always my BT friends came through when there was a fellow donk in trouble and in need of help. A HUGE thank you to firstnet911 for taking me to the ER and making sure I was ok. Also to Maggyruth for cheering me on at the finish and standing by my side to make sure I was ok. And a big thank you to Sgoehner and his wife, Danielle for helping us out by gathering everything out of transition and making sure we were ok. You guys ROCK!!
