Overall Rank = 145/543
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 3/27
Pre-race routine:

Had been wanting to get over to WP to ride the bike course all summer but things seem to always prevent me, so tried to learn as much about the course from maps and elevations. Finally put the new tires on my bike - didn't ride them in as much as I would've liked but they felt a little stiffer in the casing than the old ones. Taped my feet at home for this one as didn't want to be fumbling with that last minute. Hadn't raced WP before but knew it was possibly the biggest filed I have raced so far so expected a hard race and an AG top-5 if I was lucky.
Event warmup:

Set up in the TA. Was trying shoes with the elastic band thing for the first time. 30 mins pre - went for a jog out down the bike course. 15 mins pre-tried to get in the lake for a swim but they were trying to get people out for the pre-race meeting. I managed to get in and get wet and swim maybe 100 yds. Watched the earlier waves for lines.
Swim

  • 01m 21s / 100 yards
Comments:

Another swim where I'm not conscious I thought about technique - not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing! Drifted a little to the R as was sighting of a boat which moved (der!) Felt like a good swim to me - fastest woman swimmer was 8:34, alot of 9:xx and 10:xx in the top 10-15.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe try and draft.
Transition 1
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

Couldn't get the tap at the top of my zipper open to release the zipper pull but I don't think it cost me much as I was still running. Strange not having to put shoes on in the TA. 1:42 was 62nd overall for T1 - fastest for my AG - seems long?. Fastest women's T1 was 1:17. Fastest men's 0:50.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. For a potentially very crowded TA (hardly space in the aisle to wheel your bike - not sure what I would've done if there'd been anyone else in the aisle.) I think I remember there not being anyone else in the row yet so that was motivation to giddy up.

Comments:

Ugh. Kills me to think I swam better than I biked. Just shows that you can't cheat not putting time in on the bike. That said I worked very hard and I think my time gives me my first 20 mph average in the past 2 years. A Bethel gal passed me and I recognised it as Peggy (nice Cervelo and deep dish wheels) so used her as a carrot - we were back and forth and then she pulled away. Getting into shoes worked OK for first time. I managed to get one foot straight into the shoe and then the other shoe releases but I got my foot in after that. Passed a lot of people but maybe not one in my AG! At one point 3 women from my age group all charged past.
What would you do differently?:

I would say train more but this year with the wedding and all I'm not sure I could've trained more than I did. 3 wks now 'til my next race and I hope to get some good bike time in.
Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

Everything went very smoothly here. Feet were out of shoes not too soon and I hopped off and ran. Unclipped helmet once I was in TA so could just drop it off my head. New running shoes (too much new gear for a race I know) were great. Fastest women's T2 was 0:29, men's was 0:24. Mine was 17th amongst the women, 3rd in my AG.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, practise shoe entry maybe.
Run
  • 23m 46s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

I got passed Peggy in TA although she passed me pretty quickly there after. As I left the TA some official type person said "you're 3rd or 4th AG". I kept catching people and working to catch women ahead of me but not one of them was in my age group - one was 49, all the others were young 'uns. Hard course, although I'm happy with my pace on that hard a course after the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Felt like maybe I didn;t focus but my pace was good for so many hills.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked. Ugh. Stood in the lake for a little ice bath effect. Walked to the car and back to dump stuff and get flask of coffee! and then went back to cheer on others.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing other than more training time. Maybe if I had pre-ridden the bike course once or twice, it may have made a difference but I tried to stay focussed on the bike so hard to say if I would've gone any faster

Event comments:

Army runs a tight ship. TA needs more space between the racks and it would be nice to see it USAT sanctioned. Overall, it's a great race - nice scenic course and atmosphere. Cadets and all involved work hard to run a good event. I like to do an occasional NY race as it's a different crowd and new (fast!) faces than the CT crowd.
