Pre-race routine:

My buddy Scott who is a Massage thearapist gave me a pre race warm up massage. Ate a proteing bar and tried to settle down. About 10 min. before my waves start, I got in the water. It was cold...but not too bad. I decided against a wet suit this year, because of my shoulder.
Event warmup:

Tried to warm up in the water...I knew something was wrong from the warm up. I couldn't swim any distance with my face in the water...This is where I started freaking out.
Swim
  • 44m 47s
  • 1367 yards
  • 03m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

The horn went off...I started and almost immediately had a panic attack. I couldn't catch my breath. I pulled my head out of the water, and swam that way. I kept trying to put my face in the water, and each time, I freaked out a little.
What would you do differently?:

1. Practice open water swimming
2. get a new wet suit
3. Loose 25 lbs
Transition 1
  • 04m 33s
Comments:

As I was running to my bike, my achilles was killing me. I kept thinking, "I will never be able to finish the run"
What would you do differently?:

Under the circumstances not much...if I would have finished the swim in a better fashion, I would have cared more.
Bike
  • 1h 34m 26s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 15.79 mile/hr
Comments:

I have no clue what my AG or OA rank is on the bike portion. The web site hasn't listed that yet. If they do, I will change this data. But I have to immagine, its the same as the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Ummmm! Train on the bike. I rode a total of 30 miles in training for this event. Time in the saddle would have really helped. I have never enjoyed the bike much, but during this race, it was my favorite part. Late in the bike leg, I got my second wind (or first wind, since I never really had my first wind during the swim). I am very happy with my performance having not trained at all. Maybe next year I will actually train and maybe then I can do better.
Transition 2
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

This went smoothly. I didn't have to mess with my shoes, since I only have regular flat pedals right now. I did forget to remove my glasses, and I hate running with my glasses. but it ended up not being too bad, since my hat kept them from sliding around off my nose...
What would you do differently?:

not much
Run
  • 1h 05m 5s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Ummmm...I should have been able to do much better than this...but...I have to remember that a) I had a bad Achilles, which, although I could feel it, didn't really hurt, and b) because of said achilles, I had not ran in over 3 weeks...
What would you do differently?:

Not have an injury 3 weeks before race
Post race
Warm down:

collaps

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Me...I didn't do anything right leading up to this race.

Event comments:

I have never been so proud of such a bad performance in a race. I almost didn't run this race at all, and then several points throughout the race, I wanted to just give up. But I didn't...I couldn't give up and call myself a triathlete! How could I face people back here on BT if I knew that I could have finished, but didn't because I just couldn't HTFU. For several hours after the race, I refused to wash my numbers off my arm, I wanted them there as a badge of honor...a reminder of what I had just done. I think I want to do another Tri...not sure if I can this year, money is such a big issue, but if I can, I want to do a sprint...something smaller to try to get over this whole open water swim thing.
