Pre-race routine:

Got up and had a bannana. Usually have a bananna and cliff bar, but wasn't hungry from eating a ton of pizza the night before.
Event warmup:

Went and got my bib at the theatre. Then went for a quick jog from the finsih line backwards. I actually saw MissKelly out there running the course. She did the whole thing, and was able to make it to the starting line right before we took off.

I did some running drills and ended with 4 strides. Shedded a bunch of clothes and headed to the starting line. Holly was there with the boys, and so was HL and Whizz. Great to see them out there.

Comments:

The run went well. I started off towards the front with dumpster and Misskelly. We started with the 5K group, so it was kind of packed at the beginning. I was just trying to find a rhythm. My plan was to make sure all my splits were under 7m/m and make sure that I gave it everything I had and race like there is no tomorrow.

After about 1/4 mile, it started to clear, I looked at my watch and we were doing about 6:15m/m. Coredump passed me hear, said something snide and looked smooth and continued to go slightly faster than me. I found a guy to draft off of (heading north there was 10-20mph).

The first mile is relatively flat, and once we got into the hills, I felt good so I passed dumpster back and found some other guys to draft from. By mile two I was definitely in the top 10 and hanging around some other runners, jockeying for position and drafting. Going down the hills, I use the "Hangloose" method and just freewheel down the hills. I seemed to pass a bunch of people going down the hills.

Mile 4 and 5 included much more climbing then descending. So, it was a task to keep up the speed. I started to kick it in after mile 5 and felt like dying (mission above accomplished). The last .25 miles was uphill, so that made it a tough finish, but I was attempting to catch the guy in front of me. He was trying to catch the guy in front of him, and although I made up some ground, he finished 4 seconds in front.

Lots of fun on a challenging course.

Splits were:

1m: 6:37, 146 ahr
2m: 6:41, 161 ahr
3m: 6:42, 164 ahr
4m: 6:50, 164 ahr
5m: 6:51, 164 ahr
6m: 6:33, 165 ahr
0.28m: 6:22, 167 ahr

What would you do differently?:

Not much. Maybe start picking up the pace sooner? Hard to do b/c I was hurting at mile 4/5.
Post race
Warm down:

Holly and the boys were waiting at the finish line. We took some pictures, watched others finish and then Dumpster and I headed for slow jog to loosen up the legs and cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hills and wind.

Event comments:

Very well organized race. They have a pancacke breakfast and awards after the race. Although, its not a ton of food, it hit the spot.
