Pre-race routine:

Solo camping in adjacent state park. (Family stayed home for this one). Woke up at 5:00, rolled out of sleeping bag and made some oatmeal. Warmed up the coffee I had bought the night before (brilliant last minute thought). Had a cold, dry bagel with PB and some apple juice. Warmed up eating breakfast by a nice campfire and then broke camp down. I was out of the park by 6:05. Took the shuttle bus into Nolte Park and started getting ready.
Event warmup:

Once all my fluids were ready, I just walked around for a good bit. I did some gentle stretching and praying while listening to some great Christian music. Closer to the event I put on the running shoes and did a quick 7 minute jog and then stretched some more. Then it was lube up time for the wetsuit and down to the beach...Start time of 9:00 was delayed due to fog. It finally burned off at about 9:15. Off we go.
Swim
  • 32m 41s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 33s / 100 yards
What would you do differently?:

Get to the front at the start. I started in the second row and had to battle a bit for the first 200-300 until it thinned out. I guess my top 20 overall swim says that I should be one of those guys out in the front.
Transition 1
  • 03m 51s
Comments:

Didn't rush T1. Sat on my stool to get socks rolled on and shoes adjusted. Could have been faster, but didn't need to be.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 2h 51m 52s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.55 mile/hr
Comments:

Borrowed Ritchey Carbon WCS wheel set from Bob Keiper. I love the wheels and they really gave me a boost on the bike. I felt faster than I have before and my time was good for me.

Had a 3 hour bottle of Perpetum that I nursed the entire course, chasing with water. Also used Saltstick caps every 1/2 hour.
What would you do differently?:

Now I have to slow the pace a bit and get used to something more like 17 mph or a bit less for IMAZ.
Transition 2
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

Good T2 overall..Again, not rushing it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 2h 09m 14s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

New Amphipod water belt system for this race. I had 2 bottles of Perpetum and another with just water. (Didn't need the extra water as there was plenty on course). NO CRAMPS!!! I did feel hot on the second half but I just kept pouring water on my head and chest. Seemed to help.
What would you do differently?:

Leave two of the Perpetum bottles dry for the Full Marathon in AZ. I can fill with cold water at the stations as needed. Once the Perpetum got warm, I quickly lost interest in drinking it. Kept up the Saltstick caps every half hour on the run as well.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for 1/2 hour and then gently stretched a bit. Rinsed off with the garden hose and packed up my stuff.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Run endurance still isn't there. I plan on a run between aid stations, walk through the aid stations and walking the hills for IMAZ. I need to keep my HR better controlled.

Event comments:

I really liked this bike course. The run was okay as well (sans the big hill). Would like to come back.
