Pre-race routine:

Drove to Texas on Friday about a 12-hour drive. Drove down with a friend from the P2 Tri Club. The drive was awesome and safe. Got to the hotel and geez what a beauty. Right on the lake that we were swimming. So wonderful to be that close to the race venue. Woke up around 4:30 couldn't sleep. Ate breakfast and then showered and put on my tri suit. Got ready and went to the transition.
So just so you know I have NEVER finished a HIM in under 9 hours. The race cut off was 8 hours. The course closed at 3 p.m. So all the way down I'm thinking how in the hell am I going to finish this race on time.
Event warmup:

Ran for about 10 min to get the nervous energy out. It was wonderful to see Stacie, Cathy, Ryan and Drew. Also Kristen and her husband came down to be my sherpas! They were so awesome. I couldn't have made it through this race without them. They let me use their car to do all my errand stuff like packet pickup, get last minute food, etc. However as is my custom I got stop by a state trooper while I was driving the bike course. Defective brake light but I told the officer he could ask all the questions he wanted but this wasn't my car. Then i thought,"Holy crap he's going to think I stole it...." But told him I was in town for the race and he smiled and got all giddy. It all worked out.
So got to the transition area and saw all the BT peeps. It was freakin' cold. I couldn't feel my toes. Got into my wet suit and went to the pre race meeting.

Comments:

I decided that I would take the swim nice and easy. No overextension. I've been having back pains and didn't want to go out to hard. This race was all about the bike. So I just cruised the swim. Set a PR for this distance anyway. :)
What would you do differently?:

Maybe go a little harder. Need to draft more!

Comments:

This was a total disaster. I couldn't decide whether to wear my jacket on the bike or not. It was cold. I couldn't feel my feet. I had gotten everything on, my headband, helmet, sunglasses and sleeveless bike jersey when I decided to put my jacket on over my head. Took me several minutes to pull that thing over my head.
What would you do differently?:

Put my jacket on first! Geez crazy. Ate a bannna and made sure to drink before I got on the bike.

Comments:

I'm not cyclist but this was a win/win on the bike. I got the nutrition down. Cliff shot every 15, sip on my Gatorade camel back, 1/2 PB&J in the second hour and rest in the last hour. Took Electrolyte pills every 1/2 hour. No stomach pains, or GI issues or cramps! Wooo HOOO!
What would you do differently?:

Go harder. I can go faster longer on the bike and I need to challenge myself to do so. Stayed in 3rd gear the entire race which is good.
Transition 2
  • 03m 41s
Comments:

Had to decide whether I was going to wear the run shirt or just the tri suit one piece and bike jersey. Just decided the bike jersey was fine it was getting a little hot and I noticed I was sweating. Popped a hat on and my shoes and I was off.
What would you do differently?:

Um be better prepared for what I wanted to wear.

Comments:

OK so I have really NEVER ran after the bike on a 1/2 HIM. I usually always walk. But this time no grandma shuffle after the first 2 miles. I just picked up those feet and ran. As a result I cut a lot of my HIM time out here. It took me 4 hours to do the 1/2 Mary in my lst HIM! It was a great course except for the concrete. But shaded which is unusual. I started out with a fuel belt but my back began to hurt so I dropped it. First mile was tough but by mile 3 I was feeling good and mile 5 feeling really good. Some guy who was walking looked at me and said, "Man you're tough, you're looking good." I slowed down afer mile 10 but then picked it up when the last person in the race passed me on the run. I just kept telling myself, "Run to the lady on the hill..." that was the state trooper on the last 1.5 from the finish line. I kept saying to myself repeatedly, "They're not going to close this course on me...They're not going to close this course on me..."
At mile 10 or so there was an AID station woman and she had Coke. I took a swig of that and just immediately pepped up. At mile 11.5 another AID station had Coke so I drank that.
By that time the motorcycle cops were behind me giving me a police escort through the rest of the finish line. I was last but I felt like I was first cause they were all following me cheering me on. It was so wonderful. And then I saw Kristen's husband with about a half mile to go and he just started screaming my name and I just put it into gear and was determinted to finish this race in under 8 hours. And I be doggone if I didn't do that! Woo Hoo. And I rounded the corner to hear all the BTers screaming my name and waiting for me at the finish line. Yeah! It was a great day!

What would you do differently?:

Run faster earlier!
Post race
Warm down:

Laughed and talked with all

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more time running off the bike.

Event comments:

OK so I went into this race as a tune up for IM CDA. I didn't care what happened I just wanted to test my bike performance. Well it ended up being my best race! And if you allow me a little self-congratulatory pleasure I'm so proud of myself. I took 1 hour and 21 min off last year's HIM. I made all my time goals and I finished the race strong and happy. I need to work on the bike and the run for IM CDA but overall it was a good day! Yayyyy! I rock!

But this is by far my fastest bike in a race. Woo Hoo. My goal was less than 4 hours and I made it! Yeah. If I'd went harder I probably could have made this in 3:30.

Polar- decided to be possessed by demons and wouldn't start over. Then it wiped out my entire race. I spent the first mile trying to fix it.
Course: Two loops that took you past the FINISH LINE! Yowsers that was tough. On my first loop most everyone had finished but I hadn't and I freakin' started to cry thinking I wasn't going to finish this race.
