Run
Comments: Started out weaving through people left and right. After a bit it thinned out, and at the 1-mile mark my watch said 8:30. No way. But I felt good! Seriously?! Should I slow down? Nah, this is a race. The next couple of miles the same thing... I was holding a 9-minute mile pace?! I thought for sure that the miles were marked "short" and they would be "long" miles later on. There was no way I was running this pace. Whatever, keep pushing. I noticed a little pain in my knee about halfway through but it didn't slow me down. I grabbed water at all of the stations; it was heating up a bit. At the 5-mile mark my watch said exactly 45:00. Um, sweet! Picked it up just a bit and then got a little dizzy. That worried me, but I just kept going. I told myself I could stop in just one more mile and pass out if I had to. The dizzy-ness went away and here I was coming up on the final turn! I rounded the corner and could see the finish line. This was it. Booked it hard. I saw Tom and all of my friends and waved at them; little did I know they were not expecting me for another 5 minutes and almost missed me! SPRINT to the finish. I passed 4 girls in the finishing chute! I really gave it all I had. After the finish line I immediately felt like I was going to throw up. Wow I have never felt that way after I race. I guess I really gave it all I had! Then I looked at my watch and really, really had to concentrate on not crying. I just beat my 10K time by over 4 minutes! I couldn't believe it! What? 4 minutes?! That is insane. i was just hoping to close to an hour and my watch said 55:33. Holy Eff. What would you do differently?: Normally I would say "not be sick," but today I will say... not a damn thing! Post race
Warm down: Found Tom as fast as I could to show him my watch. He had told me yesterday that I was in much better shape even than 6 weeks ago when I ran my first 10K. I knew I'd been working hard, but had no idea that would be the result. I was overwhelmed. Tom did amazing also. His goal was to beat 40 minutes and he finished in 39:58. ROCK ON. We both had a great race. Waited awhile for the 2-mile race to begin and cheered on our friend Jeff. Back to the finish line for another friend coming in, then made our way back to the car. Ate a lovely breakfast afterwards; veggie and cheese omlet with hashbrowns and coffee. Perfect. What limited your ability to perform faster: A little congestion, but otherwise this was a perfect race. Event comments: The Wichita River Run is always a blast! Great atmosphere and tons of people. I caught a little cold a few days ago. It wasn't terrible, but enough to make me mark "sick" on yesterday's log. So I went into this race knowing I probably would not set a PR, just going to finish and have fun. This race is part of the Wichita River Festival, easily the funnest week in Wichita! Last year at this race I ran the 2-mile, and it was my very first running race, ever. I remember how nervous I was, and that I was wearing cotton shorts and a cotton tank top. LOL! Anyway.
Up at 6:15. I am a freak and HAVE to eat before I run. Gluten free bagel and water, yum!
Tom picked me up at 7:00 and we drove downtown.
Parked the car and jogged 5 or 6 blocks to packet pickup/registration. Walked back to the car to drop off the t-shirts and pin on race numbers. Then walked back to the start line. We met up with friends also doing the race, Eric (who is doing Topeka Tinman as his first Tri next month!), Aaron (who ran on our Brew to Brew team and is marathon training), Jeff (who was doing the 2-mile), and Derek (who was holding the beer. Seriously). Also ran into my long-time friend Lori, who is moving to Kazhakastan in a few months. Lots of people out!
Squeezed in about the middle while the boys made their way to the front. I had no idea how the race was going to play out, but right before the (real) cannon went off I decided to push it. Screw being sick.
