Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:30am Cent. time. That's 3:30am in my world. Had a banana, powerbar and some health shake stuff. Headed to Orange City at about 6:45.
Event warmup:

Got to the park at about 7am, race start was 8am. Saw a guy w/ a Nebraska sweatshirt and asked if he was Brian (Bripod).....he was. ;) Gave Brian his packet and stood around and talked til about 20 til. Ran about 1.5 miles at a slow jog to get warmed up and then did some stretching and headed to the start line w/ Brian.

Comments:

5K race/walk started 5min. ahead of the 10K on the same course, so it was a little frustrating having to weave our way around through the slow runners and walkers. Other than that I started out good running w/ the lead pack through the 1 mile mark. First mile was at 6:08 pace, which was right where I wanted to be. Some of the faster runners began building a gap after the mile mark, but I was able to keep them in sight for the most part. Felt good through the first lap (two loop course) and 5K split was 20:19. A touch slower than I wanted to be. Second loop started good, but this being the first "stand alone" 10K I've done, I wasn't sure how hard to push and made a rookie mistake and left way too much in the tank at the end of the race. Finished strong, but was hoping to be around 40 min. and didn't make it.
What would you do differently?:

Push the pace harder on the second 5K.
Post race
Warm down:

Chatted w/ wife, kids and in-laws. Stood at the finish line to cheer Brian across.
Ate a banana and drank a cup of juice. Stretched for about 5 minutes while the kids played on the playground.
Brian hung around to wait til I got my AG award. We chatted and met up w/ some other friends of ours.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience and mental outlook. Didn't push as hard as I should have, and probably didn't have the right mental outlook to do it.

Event comments:

Had fun doing this race and learned some valuable lessons for a future 10K. It was great getting to meet Brian (Bripod). He was very nice and a great guy.

I found it interesting that the 5K race started about .1 mile up the road in front of the 10K runners and yet the finish line was in the same spot.?. Either they were .1 short or the 10K was .1 long. Don't know which.
