Swim
Comments: this was only my second OWS ever (the first being about a 200m trial with my wetsuit in lake Osoyoos the day before)! The course LOOKED SO LONG - when I saw how far the buoys were! The water temperature wasn't that bad though (I think about 19 or 20 celcius). I got kicked twice within the first 100-150 meters (by people already doing breast stroke!). The second kick was to my neck which kind of freaked me out (not to mention hurt and winded me a bit) so I had to go onto my back for about 30-40 seconds until I regained my composure. Fortunately my 'right side breathing only' technique was not too much of a hindrance here because the buoys were always on the right. And on the final stretch (about the last 200m or so) I was swimming right next to someone that I noticed was sighting so I stopped sighting and just stuck with her since I knew she could see where 'we' were going! Overall the swim felt really good - front-crawled the whole way except when I went on to my back near the beginning. I passed quite a few men surprisingly (and their wave was 5 mins ahead of the women). And I passed quite a few women too -as I started about 2/3's back in the wave. What would you do differently?: not much - my swim went really well I think. I still would like to get faster and learn to breathe comfortably on my left side. But it wasn't needed for this race. Transition 1
Comments: Overall transition went well I think. Even the wetsuit removal - this was only my second time wearing it - and my first time in a race. I put socks on in T1 this time as I decided to wear socks this race to hopefully avoid getting blisters this time. What would you do differently?: learn speedier techniques re: the bike mounting. Bike
Comments: I think the bike portion went quite well - I passed several people - even a couple of men who started the race 5 mins ahead. Everyone had 'serious' bike 'get ups' at this race! Unlike my first tri where many had mountain bikes...it seemed like most people had tri bikes or 'aero' road bikes at least. I only have a regular little road bike - no aero - and I still had my fenders on LOL (I think mine was the ONLY bike with fenders!). What would you do differently?: Not too much - train more, learn to ride aero, remove my fenders for races!! Transition 2
Comments: went pretty smoothly - wore my zoot flats (this time with socks - no blisters YAY!)....the speed laces made things pretty smooth. Legs felts funny getting off the bike - not to mention trying to run in bike shoots without recessed cleats - that is weird enough on its own. Run
Comments: this was the worst portion of my race. I felt fine until this point. I could never seem to get my breathing 'comfortable' - and I quickly got side cramps. I had to take my first (of about 5) walk breaks at about only 3:30 mins into the run! I walked for at least 5-6 mins total of the run! (that probably could have saved me about 3 mins off of my time!) I have run 5k in 26-27 before as stand-alone runs....I thought I would be able to do this 5k in about 28 mins....>30 mins is just disappointing. I kept telling myself when I wanted to walk that "I can walk all I want AFTER I cross the finish...just not now" - and that would work for another 1-2 mins of running but eventually I just needed a walk break. Clearly - this discipline needs more focus in my training. On a positive note I guess though (wish I could use these as excuses) - my knees and hip did not hurt during the race...and I didn't get blisters ( I actually had a faster pace for the 4k in my first tri - WITH sore knees and nasty blisters!). What would you do differently?: train more - especially bricks! Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: mostly poor running endurance at the end of the race. Event comments: I will do this race again next year - with the goal of being 4-5 mins faster! Last updated: 2008-04-12 12:00 AM

I am sure glad we drove up on the Friday before the race (and not the Saturday)....it turns out we had a bit of a 'mishap' with my bike enroute and nearly 'lost it'! We had it on the Thule rack on top of our van - and it seems it is better suited for 'thick tired' bikes as my front tire somehow came out of the track (it was very windy on the drive up) and my bike flipped totally backwards - when we first heard the noise we thought my bike had flown right off the top of the van! (thankfully not) The only thing holding my bike to the van was the sip-strap thing on the back tire - but my rear tire rim was all bent to heck as well as the spokes!! It would needto be replaced! Luckily we drove the Coquihalla (I am sure I butchered the spelling of that!) way and were able to stop in Penticton - but by this time is was already 4pm Friday - we had to find a bike shop (the Bike Barn was recommended to us by locals) and see what they had/could do for us (had this been Saturday evening we might have been SOL!!). They didn't have a whole lot of rims that weren't being sold in pairs - but they did find one for us (that was actually an upgrade from what I originally had)...and by 5:20 or so (they closed at 5:30) we were on our way again. phew!
