Swim
Comments: My best race for drafting. Found someone early stayed with him out to turnaround cone and got back on him on way back. Lost him for about the last 20% of swim but found someone else for a bit. Then pushed in on my own. Breathing was good, sighting Ileft to my lead swimmer for the most part. Maybe could have gone a little faster on my own for stretches but the drafting was good. I got up to his waist a few times but seemed to be better on his feet. What would you do differently?: Definitely need to work on swim, my weakest discipline and where I lose the most time to AG competitors. Better time than last year by 1:18. Transition 1
Comments: I missed my rack by one row but Barb yelled at me and I got it right w/o too much of a delay. Due to rip in wetsuit I had some troubles getting that leg off. I was +22 seconds from last year. The rip and the wrong rack contributed some but probably not the whole 22 seconds. 3rd in AG +22 secs What would you do differently?: Do a better job on finding proper rack. I'll have decide what to do with wetsuit. Bike
Comments: Bike was good, passed Ed just after the 4 mile mark, got Scott just before last turn so just before 10 mile mark. Took a little while getting into bike shoes but not too bad. No real hills, was little headwind on the backside of loop about 7-8 miles in. This year 21.9 LY 20.7, I gained 3:25 What would you do differently?: Keep training. Increased bike mileage plus new Felt B12 this year has resulted in good gains over same races from last year. Keep working hard and hope the results continue to improve. Transition 2
Comments: I did not have as much trouble getting the Garmin wrist strap on as I did last race and Graniteman. No real issues in T2. 2 seconds faster than last year. 4th in AG +19. What would you do differently?: Decent ranks within AG in both TA but should be closer in time to leaders. Free time can be had in TA. Run
Comments: Run went well. Got my legs fairly early. I really wanted to do better than last year and knew I finished strong with my fellow competitior last year. Garmin wasn't showing great times but decent 7:05 and 6:50 for first 2 miles. Mile 3 was 6:58 and I knew I would have to pick it up. I started pacing with a younger guy late 20s early 30s and made conscience effort to increase pace. Mile 4 showed 6:50. I tried to stay steady but increase pace last mile. Last .81 on Garmin showed a 6:14 pace. There was no one around me like last year so had to do it on my own. Very happy with official 6:33 pace vs LY 6:45. Improved by 56 secs. Got to high five Ed, Scott and Jennifer on my way back. What would you do differently?: I still think I could have gone a little harder. I did not feel totally spent at end of race. Post race
Warm down: Went back to watch Ed and Scott finish. Talked to Bill Joppa who had done short course. Hooked up with Barb. We stayed for awards & prizes. Went really fast cause rain was coming and did rain at the end of awards. They gave way some Rudy Project helmets this year. Scott (the lucky kid) won a QR wetsuit from Gear West, one of the 5 or 6 major prizes. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing mucj, kind of hectic time last few days with Mike Kennedy's funeral and the 2 trips to Cities on Thu & Fri and getting all the BWCA stuff ready. All this detracted from race focus which maybe is not much od a factor but that's life. Event comments: I improved by 5:17 from last year, better in all 3 legs, 20 sec slower in T times, primarily T1. Almost got under 2:00. Tough AG. Stracke finished 3rd only 2:44 ahead of me. My time would have been good for a 3rd place finish last year. Last updated: 2008-04-14 12:00 AM

Stayed at Econo Lodge this year, about 5 miles from site. Met up with son Scott the night before at packet pickup and we all went to supper together at Grandma's at Miller Hill. Cajun Chicken Pasta again this year. In the am, Honey Nut Cheerios and banana. Some sports drink during set up. Got a rack up fron near bike out again this year, good location. Scott was in my rack, Bill Joppa (short) was a couple over and Ed Younk (long) was down a few. I ran into Jennifer Rabbitts and he rhusband at packet pickup on Sat night.
Ran first, will be first race with new Asics shoes, kind of racing flats. Bike warm up, got shoes on bike and bike in correct gear. Had awhile to wait as I was 2nd to last wave of long course and we had to wait for all the short course folks. Gel just before swim. I did rip my wet suit on the back of the calf when putting on, about 4 inches up from the bottom.
