Pre-race routine:

Up at 4am. Ate banana and power bar, drank some water. I did take a shower which I usually don't do. Did some stretching. I was staying at Excalibur, took tram to Mandalay Bay and followed crowd.

Event warmup:

Got a bottle of water at start. Some more stretching. Wandered down to start area and found a spot on the edge. Ate a gel about 10 minutes before start. Removed sweats. Kind of had to pee but nowhere to go.

Comments:

A little crowded at the beginning as to be expected. I kind of had to pee before start but no place to really go once I got lined up. I hit a porta-potty around mile 4.

  • 4 goals
1 - set pr, previous was first marathon, Twin Cities in 1998, 4:24:56. This was pretty much a given unless something drastic happened.
2 - beat my son Scott's best marathon time of 3:35:51 at Grandma's in 2005
3 - Boston qualify, sub 3:36 for my AG
    4 - Sub 3:30

With my 3:31:14 finish I accomplished 3 of 4 goals. Sub 3:30 was in grasp until I had calf cramps/tightening last 3 miles or so. Right tightened up first, left a little more towards the finish. My times slowed significantly.

Overall very pleased with my effort and results.
    What would you do differently?:

Consider electrolyte pills. Drink more gatorade, I was alternating between water/gatorade and drinking on the run so maybe did not get as much fluids as in training. Maybe consider a fuel belt for the next race.
    Post race
    Warm down:

At finish I was actually a little dizzy when I stopped running. I went over and leaned against the fence for a bit. Got some water and a plastic wrap. Got in line for massage since it was short. During massage both calves cramped up bad, to the point I was screaming. I had 2 people working on me for a bit. Got a banana, gatorade, chocolate milk after massage. Felt chilled then so just headed back to hotel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I had the sub 3:30 right there until I started struggling the last 3 miles. Tightness/cramps in calves.

    Event comments:

There were I think 2 water stops that were not manned. Start was not organized very well but didn't afect me, my gun/chip time were only a minute apart. Not a whole lot of spectators. Decent spectators right at finish but pretty sparse last couple of miles when we joined with the walkers from the half marathon. Goody bag was definitely poor, cotton T-shirt was about it.
