Pre-race routine:

I stayed with Paula and her husband Ben at her sister-in-law's house. We drove up and got our packets Friday night - went out to eat...and we woke up about 4am on Saturday. I ate a frozen scrambled egg bowl thing and a sausage crossaint...yes, I was hungry. Diet coke AND an refridgerated Starbucks drink...I don't know what flavor. Paula and I got lost a little on the way there, but when we got there I got my body marked. Set up transition. Saw a few people, and went to get my chip. It was there they informed me the right side of my body was marked 180, and the left 183. YEP. So I did the good old spit and rub on the 3's and went back to body marking.
Event warmup:

I didn't do any official warming up, but I did do a lot of sprinting from here to there...getting my body markings fixed....does that count?
  • 06m 50s
  • 328 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards

I suck at swimming, what can I say? I didn't pass anyone - one guy passed me in the very last lane.
What would you do differently?:

I just need to swim more...but I really swim as much as my schedule allows.
Transition 1
  • 01m 39s

For this race I had two goals...I didn't think I would do all that great overall due to lack of training...so I had two other goals...one was to have good transitions. I had the 2nd best T1 in my age group - the best was 1:34. I decided I was not going to wear gloves in this sprint...first time doing that...and no bike jersey.
What would you do differently?:

Still working on speed here.
  • 39m 23s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.28 mile/hr

The best bike time in my AG was 38:54. I am very proud of my bike...she did not have an attitude and throw me during the race.
What would you do differently?:

I really needed to air up my tires better, but I forgot about it before the race. Oh - I need more miles on the road or in the trainer.
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s

I got a slight cramp in my left foot taking off my cycle shoe, stretched a tad...changed shoes helmet off...grabbed garmin and left.
What would you do differently?:

I wanted under one minute...but I had that slight cramp....and went a little slow looking for my bike rack...I should have counted racks before the tri started instead of walking slow looking at the signs...
  • 24m 42s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 58s  min/mile

The run was okay. My 2nd goal was to try to do the tri with under an 8 minute mile pace. I was hitting it...and at the end had a little energy...saw a group of three guys running together, and decided to sprint past them...we were near the end...I did it...and lost my footing...tripped on nothing I guess, and FELL HARD. See the pic of my legs after the got cleaned up on this report. I wound up landing HARD on knees and hit my elbow, and get this...slammed my head right into the road. I really don't know how I wound up in that position. A girl yelled, "Are you okay" And my big concern was that I didn't break my Garmin...I did scrape some buttons...I got up and started running, but could feel the blood oozing down my leg...and it was stinging. Garmin was still on, I looked, and I knew I had to book it if I wanted to pace under 8. I was so mad. What a dumb@ss. Oh, and I'm sure those guys I passed had a GREAT LAUGH at the dumb idiot who sprinted by and then kissed pavement.
What would you do differently?:

Not fall obviously. I did however BARELY beat my goal. BARELY.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around - went to an ambulance just to get some stuff to clean up my legs. I actually got to meet a few BTers in person... I met Gary (Gaarryy) the night before at packet pick up... at the race I met Karen (KSH), Johnny (JBrashear), Steve (doughboy), Marcy (dodgersmom)..and someone else...ugh...I was still overwhelmed from the head smash. I saw William from the my local tri club again after the race...found Paula...William tells me his time...and I am like - DID YOU WIN? He says he does not know...he thinks... You know, I don't know about that kid. So I drag him to the posted results, and at that point yes he won. He was still telling me there could have been a last minute sign up and he could still be knocked out, so we hang out some and talk and keep checking. Oh - he did win it, and I was really proud of that kid...he had just had a really bad accident on his bike...and was still suffering a hamstring injury....so he did great despite his injuries.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training. Also I had my own car wreck just a few days before the event, which affected how I felt physically. The whole feeling like I got thrown against the wall feeling was not as bad as a couple days before, but I was still somewhat sore. BUT - that is life, right? We won't always be exactly where we want to be for any race I guess - ever.

Event comments:

I really enjoyed this race...really enjoyed meeting BTers face to face ...great pool....great bike route...a little too much mud for me on the run, but that was not their fault...I had fun. Despite kissing the sidewalk it was a great event for me. I placed 2nd overall in my AG..which I am still looking at the numbers because my swim REALLY sucked bad...and was 4th in the run....but my time was 3+ minutes better than the girl right under...I'll study it later.

Great event...I'll do it again next year if there isn't a conflict.
