Pre-race routine:

Since we live so close to the race site, we got to sleep in a little later than normal. Out of bed at 5:15, showered, pick up the MIL, and we were at the race site at 6:15.
Had a decent rack to choose from, directly in the middle, and was able to get a good spot too. About 6 from the end on the way to bike out.
Event warmup:

go inside and wait for 30 minutes before its my turn to swim. Got to meet Scott (Smeador) before the start.

Comments:

Im not sure what went wrong here....My plan was to go hard for the 1st 100 or until I found the feet in front of me, and just cruise in. By the time I got to the 1st turn, my 5sec guy was long gone. I went hard the 1st 50, but I immediately backed off a little. I got passed by 2 before I even hit the 100 wall?????what the hell? So I grabbed super kicking mans feet, and held on for another 100 yards. Around 200 I got passed by 2 more I think? I never felt like I was going this slow...this was training paced swimming speed? I did find it funny that there were like 4 gu packets on the bottom of the pool
What would you do differently?:

Go harder I guess? I find it hard to believe that my tri suit slowed me down. I did not have a comfortable swim, it was harder than training pace.
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

5th fastest T1, after a really disappointing swim.
I was going to make a game time decision to wear socks or not, and based on it being a little cool, I wore them. Good transition except for those extra 10 seconds. No fumbles or mistakes. I passed 4 or 5 peoplethat were around me having a picnic in transition.
What would you do differently?:

ehh, only thing would be the socks
Bike

Comments:

I thought this would have been better too, but in hindsite, I planned to eat alot of paste today, but I think I only nibbled on it a little. I did pass people, which is unusual for me. I started off riding hard and according to my HRM, I was in mid zone 4. As soon as I hit the first rise, I changed into my small ring, but unfortunately my chain didn't. I would drop it one more time in the 2nd loop too. I think I lost alot of focus when my watch died before I made it around to start the 2nd loop. In my simple little mind, I would have looked at the 1st lap time, and made a decision to go alot harder or maintain based on what I had done. Without that, I had no measure, but if anything, I should have gone way too hard becasue of it.

What would you do differently?:

In hindsight, I could have gone alot harder. I took the hill/rises too easy, and in general was way too comfortable for the majority of the ride.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

4th Fastest T2.
I felt pretty good off the bike, short steps into transition, and quick in and out.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really

Comments:

I knew when I started, I did not go hard enough on the bike.....My running was too good. I took the first minute or 2 just getting my feet under me, and then it was a little downhill, so it was a good change to get moving. Just as I started my first loop of the lake, I heard Marcy call me from the other side of the lake, finishing her first loop. It took her about 1/2 a lap to catch me, so I must have been going pretty well. I did take a few walk breaks....but I shouldn't have. My head told me I needed it, not my legs. I still averaged sub 12.
After I had finished my 2 laps of the lake and was turning up the hill for the last 3/4 mile I saw my arch rival from last year just coming into start the 1st lap of the lake. This was probably the best feeling, knowing that last year we were stuck together like glue....Not today....Not this year!
What would you do differently?:

The theme remains the same....Go harder
Post race
Warm down:

hang around in finishing chute talking with Karen, Johnny, Jen, Brandt, Gary, Marcy, Bonnie, and others. Met TeeCris, and Superbird (sorry, I can't remember your names) And had a Pancake. then we waited forever for the awards.....

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weight, and the fact that I still do not yet know how much I should hurt in a sprint.

Event comments:

I PR'd by 17 minutes, and beat my arch rival by over 18 minutes! How can I complain. I could have pushed alot harder, and in fact I think that the next sprint I will not wear a watch at all, so I just have to go until it hurts.
