Swim
Comments: Overall the swim went very well, it was a little crowded making the turn to head back to shore becasue all the groups caught up with one another. What would you do differently?: not much. The water was nice, so I wouldn't say that I needed a wetsuit. This was most likely the strongest part of my day. Transition 1
Comments: Getting into the transition area, everything was going good. I tossed on a long sleeve shirt, put on my helmet and sunglasses and was off and running. The transition area was all sand which made it pretty difficult to run with the bike, but overall it wasn't too bad. What would you do differently?: Not much at all, although I have been practicing it, this was my first time jumping on the bike with the shoes already clipped in, and I was able to get my feet into them without any problem. Bike
Comments: I was averaging somewhere between high 19s and low 20 MPH for the first 13-16 miles (little did I know that this was with a slight tailwind). After making the turn and heading back to the transition, the wind seemed like it was blowing significantly harder, and I was having trouble keeping a good rythym on the hills. I live in a really flat area, and we are very heavily wooded, so I really didn't get a chance to train alot in hills and wind, which I really need to start doing. What would you do differently?: I would try to control myself a little more in the beginning of the race to that I can really feel like I have a strong finish coming into the transition. I really need to get more comfortable with hills wind and learning what gears I should be using. Transition 2
Comments: Again, this was my first time leaving my shoes on the bike. I was surprised at how well it worked. The sand again made it very difficult to run with the bike. What would you do differently?: Not much, I think that along with my swim, my transitions were really my strength. Run
Comments: The first mile of the run was a little difficult becasue me feet seemed to be numb from the cold weather on the bike. Even though it seemed like the toughest mile, it wasn't all that bad because I went out in 8:20 which is pretty much what I wanted to do. There was only 1 water station, which wasn't a problem because it wasn't very hot or sunny, but had the weather been different, this could have been a problem. What would you do differently?: I need to do a couple more bricks, I had only done 1 going into the race, and while I definitely think it helped, I think that doing more bricks would have made a difference. I also think that I need to just run more overall, I don't feel like I had enough of a running base for this race. Post race
Warm down: Jogged a little bit of the course to watch my roomate and girlfriend finish thier races (My girlfriend took 3rd in her agegroup!) What limited your ability to perform faster: I think just a lack of time to train limited my performance. I signed up for this becasue it was so early in the season, but I don't have an indoor trainer and hare running on a treadmill, so I really didn't start training soon enough. Event comments: Overall, the race was alot of fun, and I liked the longer bike, because that is definitely one of my weakest spots, so I really wanted to test myself and see what I could do. I think I pushed a little too hard on it, and it affected my run, but overall I am pretty pleased with my performance. As a side note, I would like to thank all the police officers on the bike course becasue they did a great job, and they always seemed happy to help. Also, I know that there was one pretty bad accident on the first bridge that we crossed, and they handled it great. Last updated: 2008-04-17 12:00 AM

Got to the race site, finished checking in, dropped off bike and transition stuff in the transition area, pumped up the tires on my bike, and checked over everything once more.
Jogged for about 5 minutes and jumped in to the lake to swim for about 5 minutes. I figured I should try to get acclimated to the water seeing as how I was one of only 3 or 4 people there without a wetsuit.
